ps. and the poll above is completely stolen from brian's post. it just seemed to fit so i went with it.
-
after listening to the last comparison i would have to say A = ua-5 and B = V3.
-
could someone PLEASE snail mail this to me :-*
-
Thanks for posting this, George. Looking forward to listening to it tonight!

id do it but dave's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me!

"id do it but dave's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me! "
Dude, I am sooo with you on this, I'm glad I finally found somebody else who agrees that Dave's voice is the sole reason I don't listen to DMB. It's a shame too, I really don't mind the *music* at all, it's just that when he sings is when I turn it off...
-
for me, the dave matthews band, just like counting crows and so many others are all bands that are held back by their frontmen.

Dude... I hate arguing opinions about music... but the counting crows are way worse than just their vokillist...
???

musically they are pretty decent, their vocals, that fat bastard adam duritz is what tears that band apart for me.
-
I am going with A being the V3 and B the U-A5. I like the A source better.

<edit> I am actually changing. I like source A, but I think it is the wmod U-A5. B is the V3.

I'm with 'b' for the v3 and like it best. I think the v3 and w-mod sound more unique and different in this comparison than in Brian's tests. Not sure why - maybe we could get the whole chain outlined.
What's striking is how different the two sound on those first 3 clicks of the drum sticks at the beginning of Salsbury Hill. That's really all you need to hear to tell the difference!
With headphones, 'b' had a whole different dimensional feel - voice and guitar sounded more upfront. Comparitively, it made 'a' sound like it was missing detail. That's what makes me think 'a' is the w-mod.
Now if the source was really bright - I bet you I'd prefer 'a', (I preferred the w-mod in Brian's first test).
-
Source A seems to be punchier in the kick and low end. Source B seems to be rather smooth and detailed, but too subdued to me in the kick and lows.
-
One thing that I found interesting was to focus on the opening chord of "lie in our graves." I thought I heard a difference in position within the soundstage. A seemed to take up more than just the center; it was wider and deeper. Are there any pictures of the rig(s)?
Both sources sound good for what they are (e.g. stack tapes). I gave the nod to A, but to tell you the truth, I really don't know that I could identify it as either. Perhaps I don't have enough experiance listening to either of these boxes. Either way, Doug Oade has done a great job with his mods.

Adam Duritz writes a ton of their music (music, not lyrics) and plays quite a bit on the albums as well, both guitar & piano.

sorry no pics. dmb is not very friendly with cameras. both mics were on 1 stand. the V3 source at ~14 feet. and my 480's clamped about 2 feet lower than his. both A-B pointed dead on the stack from 6th row. stack was probably about 20' away from the mics.

So, let's hear it... What is what?

Damn! I thought they sounded too different. Sorry guys - good effort but I don't think the comparison is valid if you're using separate mics (even if they're the same type and at the same elevation).
I kinda suspected there was more going on here...

I think we need to follow Brian's lead and truly isolate the gear being compared. I honestly think either the two sets of mics sound different, or the 2 foot spread between them made a difference. But thanks regardless!

I'm pretty sure the A source is the warm mod ua-5.
-
^^ reasons
1. The warm mod ua-5 seems to carry a more "up front" characteristic throughout these tests. (wonder how the p-mod does since that's supposed to be the more "up front" mod!)
2. warm mod ua-5 has a richer sound
-
^^
3. AKG's are generally natural, flat mics and the V3 usually brings out the pure mic characteristics. Source A sounds a bit more bassy for a mic that usually carries a flat, natural sound

hey greg, how are those 391's treatin' ya?
-
I've only listened to this on headphones (too late to crank up the volume) but I perfered B (which my change tommorrow when I listen through speakers)
In the two comparisons that Brian did I guessed that the source I liked better was the V3 and was wrong both times, my guess this time is source B = Warm UA-5
-
hey chase, the 391's are working well. I taped a moe show in portland, ME and they worked perfectly, however, the boston 12-2 phish show came out a bit bass heavy/muddy for my taste..saving up for 393's which hopefully will fix that problem when taping in shitty venues like the fleet center. FYI, I cannot seem to find that bnc connector for the DMIC-20. I'll paypal you the money for the missing part once I find out how much a replacement costs.
-
I was hoping to listen to this comp before I left town on vacation, but didn't have time. Rats. Gonna have to listen to it when I get back home in a week. Looking forward to hearing it!
-
greg don't worry about it, it was only $5 and i won't need one ever agin most likely. glad you like the 391s, i need to get some hyper caps too. and now back to V3 vs. UA-5....

first off time for an apology. this isn't a true comparison. after talking to eric again he told me that he had the 70hz rolloff on the mics turned on. he never mentioned it to me before cause he assumed i knew it cause he always uses it. so i'll take the blame there. as for which source is which. A is the wmod and B is the V3. thanks for listening and sorry for the not true comparison.

which one had the rolloff???
-
i would assume the V3 source has the rolloff since gsisak owns a w-mod ua-5.
