i LOVE it....seriously tho, a nice and well rounded sound over my dmic, and another thing i think i can notice is the rear axis rejection(at least more than the dmic), just a nice, upfront sound, and a lil less "harsh" than w/ the dmic(but i also liked that a lil) 8)
its like that infomercial on tv, "set it, and forget it"
besides a couple "small" tunings, all was solid, and i like the sound, its also a lil more tight and focused IMO!!! ;D
did i mention this thing is a FUGGIN tank!!! :D
-
and its SOOOOOO damn smooth!! ;D
im even liking it in a shitty venue 8)
-
I dont think that a preamp will do anything for the way the microphone listsens....as in , rear axis rejection.
it can alter the soundstage, but it probably doesnt influence the performance of the mics.

yeah, thats what i was thinking, maybe bacause it was EMPTY, but it could def be the soundstage, THAT is simply AMAZING!!!! ;D
good point nick, but i guess i was trying to say compared to the dmic, the v3 def picks up diff "detail" than the previous box!! 8)
it kinda picks up what it needs for lack of better phrasing, and dont flame me guyz, this is my first run w/ my own v3!!!just my initial thoughts!! ;)

if the pre-amp has varaible impedance swithes and rise time settings it can have in some cases a big influence.

bean--glad to hear you're loving the new box. I might have to give it a whirl some time. If you want me to post any of your stuff on my server or as BTs, let me know!
-
good to hear you like it, also come in handy if you lock your keys in your car and need to break a window. ;D
-
I ran Bush's for over a month with the 480's & TL's. The V3 is great. I want one now.
Glad your liking it Bean +

V3=new school crack :o
-
yeah tad...there's one on your list after sts9 the other night, am i wrong :wink2:

hehehe, thanks guyz, it really is a great box 8)

interesting conversation today with a well-known respected retailer, who I will not identify, who cracked on the a/d stage in the v3 as I have. I love the v2, so in your face and transparent, the v3 a/d chip imo just does not do the job in preserving that sound. Bean, try a mod sbm1 or ad1k at the end, and see what I mean.
-
that's why i'm still running the v2/ad1k combo.... ;)
-
I loved my V2 > modSBM-1 combo, but I obviously like my V3 better (duh, that's why I run it). ;D Both great choices, with different sonic characteristics. If I didn't have the V3, I'd go back to V2 > modSBM-1.
And Bean (you already know this), pay no attention to Marc - you obviously know what your ears/brain like, so stick with it. :)

right as rain...but if you have easy access to a mod sbm1 or 1k, do a comparison....join me in gear slut hell, bean. ;D
-
gear slut hell?
The gates of gear slut hell require a hazing into the world of high end playback systems! This game makes remote gear seem cheap! ;)
Until then yer just a wee demon :veryevil:
sorry...bullshit, Moke. I don't need a 10k home stereo to tell me what I like and don't like.
-
whoops, put me foot in my mouth, see what ya mean, Moke. And yeah, you're right....this 7k or so in my bag is nothing compared to what you can drop for the good home shit. :P
-
i think he was saying that gear sluttiness in road gear doesn't compare to how bad it would be once you start switching out components in a hi-end home playback system. he wasn't making fun of you for listening in your car. he was leaving that up to me. ;D
-
;D. I got that. hard to believe, me jumping the gun? I basically had to pick a passion. Can't afford the remote gear and top playback.

The V3 AD chip is the same as the Apogee AD chip if i remember correctly. The Apogee pre/gain stage is what makes the MiniMe have a completely different sound. Some think it's chintzy sounding, others like it. ;)
Marc, maybe it's the combo of the Grace pre and the AD chip you're not a fan of. The SBM1/AD1K with a V2 must be right up your alley?! What ever happened to your V3?
I do think that the V2>AD1k/AD2k/SMB1 combo is real nice, but for 24bit, the choices are limited for what you can use down the road.
Right on Bean! Enjoy it...give it a whirl in 24bit if you can get the chance :)

most high end converters use the same ad chips...i think they cost like 5 dollars or less.
-
:-*
So whats this I hear about a car sys? ??? 8)
Actually I cast pre-pitty for you should you ever venture into the playback world..... Way too many choices and combos! You'd go nuts!
he speaks the truth... I've been really, really well behaved and just recently starting adding some components... I can tell this problem is going to get worse long before it ever gets better!
-

Exactly! What differentiates the units is the dither to 16 bit, not the chips.
This article (http://www.cadenzarecording.com/dither.html) about dither is pretty neat. I think that I got it from a post here a while back. Anyway, its exciting to think that you can by-pass this formula by staying 24bit, and getting closer to the ever elusive analog sound.

it just so happens we have a couple v3's, a dmic, a mme, and a v2>ad1k.....so some comps WILL be done....
BUT, no matter how damn good the ad1k soundz, reliability and ergonomics are not worth it IMO 8)
i would love to get a mod-sbm1 for 16 bit while i let the v3 shine in 24 bit!!! 8)actually, w/ in a year, that should be possible ;D

Bean, didn't mean to shit on your parade, if you love your sound, stick with it! My bad.
As for whether it's the dither, a/d, analog stage, whatever. Something is happening in the process of converting the v2 signal into 16 bit digital that I do not like, and is not true to the v2 sound, imo. I liked the sound of v2>hhb more than straight v3, and to me, that has to say something about the process of converting to digital, to my ears. Yeah, when we have reliable 24 bit, dither won't be an issue. For now, though, it is.

no doubt, it DOES get fatiguing art times, but i think everything else about it more than makes up for it......
if i had the $$, i prolly wouldve ran psp-3>mme, but ALOT of things got me away from that combo
power, ergonomics, desgin, ease of use, blah, blah, blah....but i DO feel ya marc......
personally, i like the 402x> ad1000 the best, every tape i own of that combo ROCKS your PHACE!!! 8)
