Title: replacement pads for Sony MDR-7509?
Post by: asobriquet on May 24, 2011, 11:46:50 PM
Hey folks,

I'm wanting to replace the aging earpads on my MDR-7509 headphones, but am looking to avoid the egregious cost that Sony charges for them - anybody have a line on a less expensive alternative?  I see that the MDR-7506 model can be replaced with Beyerdynamic DT-250 (or DT-280 earpads), but I think that the 7506's might have a smaller earphone circumference than the 7509's which could make the beyerdynamic pads unsuitable for my 7509's.

I'm hoping someone here can suggest a lower cost alternative that has worked for them.

Thanks.

My MDR-7506's appear to use the same size earpads as your 7509 but you'll want to be sure.   I recently picked up a pair of the Pearstone deluxe velour replacement earpads from B&H linked below for $19.95.  Pearstone also makes a standard version like the original Sony earpads for $5 less but I highly recommend the deluxe velour model because the velour is so much more comfortable than the original earpads for extended listening with these cans.

I got some knock offs from Fleabay for $5.00 a pair they fit just fine and were exactly the same dimensions as the ones I had on my pair. I purchased two pairs because they were so cheap.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Digigal, like you, I think I'd prefer the velour pads, but I'll have to find out if they will definately fit or not before buying them (I may just call B and H Photo).

Chris, nice price on the replacement pads!  I'm guessing that they are faux-leather like the original pads?  If I can find cheaper velour models I'll get them, but if not, I'll try to find some of the ones you got.

Thanks again.

I wonder how this affects frequency response of the headphones.. Because the original pads dont breath like the valor ones do. I wonder if you will loose bass response?

Really only the outer part that rests on your ear is velour everything else appears the be identical materials to Sony and should not affect the drivers at all, it is merely a much needed comfort mod.

The fake leather on the Sony headphones does not pass sound as easily as Velour would so I think they would sound different.

I don't see how this could possibly affect the frequency response from the drivers to your ears.  I personally did not notice any change in sound after replacing the ear pads.  They are much more comfortable to wear with velour ear pads especially for extended use.

I did not notice any difference with the new velour pads when compared to my original Sony pads.
