For the uninitiated, what special qualities are you looking for in a turntable preamp? Looking at the bellari it certainly claims to emphasize the characteristics of a turntable vs another source. Do these aim to emphasize the warm/natural aspect that many people like about vinyl?

lehman black cube
The black cube is an excellent suggestion. I had aBellari for a little bit & maybe mine was just a mix match with my cart but I did not like it at all, certainly not worth the price for a new one. I bought one when they first came out so while it might have been a synergy issue with my system hopefully the latest model is a little more refined. There are plenty of plenty options in the sub $500 range. I'd check Agon, I'm sure you can do very well with your budget.

Pro-Ject Phono Box S Phono Preamp for around $200 new?
Budget friendly, and probably has a decent resale if you want to upgrade...

Anyone have experience with the Emotiva XPS-1? Great reviews on audiokarma and one heck of a price point at 150 bucks.

In the $500 range the black cube is the way to go. There is a deluxe on eBay for less than $500 right now. the other preamps will give you a taste and some promise to move forward the black cube will get you there at under $500. It may be all the preamp you will need moving forward the others give a taste and entre into "what do I buy to replace this preamp". So, do yourself a favor and buy right the first time.

This, I wish I never sold mine.

Nope, nothing wrong with a vintage receive. I love my Sanusi AU but still use my phono amp. Enjoy! Great find.
