My sub died (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=170396.0), but it's bonus time at work and I'm looking for a good price vs performance unit. Shopping 10 years ago, Hsu Research was a brand I considered. Any other sub makers that get good reviews that won't break the bank?
My listening room is just under 2,000 ft.3, and the previous sub had a 10" driver and 250W amp. Thanks for any pointers.

Check out the Dayton Audio sub's at www.parts-express.com.
Great price performance ratio. Their base models range from 8" to 15". The 12" is 129$ and the 15" is 199$.

I'd be interested in some suggestions too. Preferably something available used.
My playback system is in my sig. The amp is 100W. I'd like to fill out the bass a bit since those ELS 8's are a little lacking in that dept.
My room is small. I'd say 25ft x 15ft.

Hsu is still active, but I think the leaders in that segment are now SVS and Rythmik. You can read about them in some huge threads over on the AVS forums. Here's the Rythmik thread (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-subwoofers-bass-transducers/1214550-official-rythmik-audio-subwoofer-thread.html). And here's the SVS thread (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-subwoofers-bass-transducers/737143-official-svs-owners-support-thread.html).
There are a couple of things to consider. One is sealed vs. ported. Another is single vs. dual (or more). Both of these things are argued to death and back many times in those huge threads.

Here's a vote for Hsu. I had one of their early versions, the 5' tall tube (1220 HO) years ago. Easily the best sub i've ever owned. Insane amounts of tight, deep output. But not very practical once i had little kids running around (tips over easily). Since then i bought one of their smaller STF series subs and its outstanding. I'm comparing Hsu with Velodyne, AR, and Sunfire. Hsu would be my choice.
Some of their newer versions have variable tuning where you can run it sealed or ported via "plugs" that close/open the port.
There are always gonna be new favorites on the various forums out there, but Hsu's been doing this for a while, constantly improving/innovating and i never had issues with their electronics, drivers or cabinets. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. The Rythmik units are outside of my budget (and probably outclass the rest of my system), and only the smallest SVS unit matches what I'm willing to spend. The cheaper Dayton units are probably alright for HT, but I need something for my 2-channel playback. I think there are a couple of the Hsu VTF models that are in my price range, so that may be where I go. Can't decide between the 10" or 12" driver. :hmmm:

Another vote for Hsu. Have their STF-2 in my home theater and it definitely does the job.

I have Velodyne MiniVee in my home theater 2 channel system.
