Title: budget speakers recommendations
Post by: kindms on April 13, 2015, 01:15:57 PM
Thinking about putting some speakers out in the workshop type situation. So not for critical listening just hanging out etc. was wondering what folks might suggest. space is not an issue

I have a pair of VR-2s which are my primary mains. I have a pair of Klipsch KG 1.5ss which I use as my L / R home theater setup

so if you were like buy these and put the klipsch out in the barn etc that is also doable

lets say budget of 500 +or-  but the lower the better.

Kindms: as you know I like my AudioEngine A2's for desktop listening. they were recommended from someone here at TS. Their A5+ series is under your budget:

they may not be quite the SQ you are seeking, just my $.02.  8)

the bamboo ones look nice for your workshop.

No specific speaker recommendation, but I see a lot of nice speakers on my local Craigslist...  Maybe you'd have luck with yours???

Just to give you an idea of what's out there, you could check the Stereophile Recommended Speakers page.  I frequently found that I would choose a component and some time later they'd review it and endorse it.  There's a lot of BS in that mag, which is why I stopped subscribing years ago, but you can at least get a general sense of what speakers are considered a good value.

http://www.stereophile.com/content/2014-recommended-components-loudspeakers

Of the Audioengine 5+, they rate it "$$$" which = great value (vs. being expensive).

*********************************************
Audioengine 5+: $399/pair $$$
(stands necessary)

"The Audioengine 5 powered speakers come packed in attractive cloth drawstring bags, and include several convenient accessories: an AC power cable, miniplug interconnects in length of 2m, an RCA cable (2m), a 3.75m length of simple speaker cable, and a remote control. Each A5 cabinet is made of 25mm-thick MDF, measures 10" H by 7" W by 7.75" D, and houses a 20mm silk-dome tweeter and a 5" Kevlar-cone woofer. The left speaker enclosure contains a 50Wpc dual class-AB monolithic amplifier, as well as the power button, volume knob, iPod charging port, and IR window for the remote. Compared to the PSB Alpha B1, the Audioengine lacked some high-frequency detail and delicacy, but offered outstanding bass control, transparency, and drama, said SM. Price is for satin black and high-gloss white finishes; bamboo adds $70. (Vol.34 No.5 WWW)"

How does 59.80$ sound...

The Dayton Audio B652-Air  (http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-b652-air-6-1-2-bookshelf-speaker-pair-with-amt-tweeter--300-651)will fit the bill...Don't let the price fool you...

You can add a sub for just a few bucks more..119$....Dayton Audio SUB-1000 (http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1000-10-100-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-628)

Total for both...178.80$

Nice Review here from C-net (http://www.cnet.com/news/dayton-b652-air-dirt-cheap-speakers-arent-supposed-to-sound-like-this/)

User reviews from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-B652-AIR-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00NOA58RS).

I know there was a stereophile review somewhere but can't find it at the moment...

Actually check out the link above for Stereophile recommended component loudspeakers the B652 is on the list.
