Title: Fostex PM 6.4.1 What do you think?
Post by: SacredMetal on October 08, 2016, 12:44:46 AM
Looking at a pair of these for my monitors. I am ole' skool & have always respected Fostex back in its hey day.

I can get a slightly used pair for a great price.

Planning on testing them out early next week at GC with some of my recorded material.

not a KRK fan, have been looking at the Tannoy's. The Dynaudio's I had my eye on sold (for more than I could afford anyway...)

I like these because they are a true 3 way with tri-amped cabinets.

One question is would you add an outboard preamp to them? I plan to run them off my computer for editing & playback at my DAW.

MY HT system is too big to do that on, I want these for my office. They are a bit large, but they would have decent bass (55Hz).

If I had the room I think I'd surely give them a listen.  I've got limited desktop space and have found the Tannoy Revel 402 to be adequate for my needs, but prolly the 5's would have a  hint more bottom.

HTH

They are quite a bit smaller than my monitors I built back in the early 90's. Would prefer a 8" but that would also be too large. I'm hoping the 6's can keep up with my gongs.

Yes, amongst other things I was involved with in a startup high-end speaker company.  I was the production manager. We built some prototypes & a few samples for CES but lost our funding & never recovered. I kept one of the sets for my personal use. But they are too big for my DAW.

Gave them a listen today, The midrange & high's were amazing. I heard things I didn't want to hear (that was good) meaning artifacts in the recording that i had not heard before.

I could clearly hear stuff in the background that was going on next door that I had missed in previous listening. I used the recording I have up on Soundcloud.com. I was pleased & bummed at the same time.

Going back for a 2nd listen with some fresh material with before & after edits to see how well I can hear the difference.

Bottom end was a little on the light side but I may be able to fix that with a sub I have hanging around.

I've decided I need to add a preamp so I have more control over the input volume to these besides coming off the computer. I have an ole' skool Dynaco tube preamp I may try on these. But that would be unbalanced. Not sure if that really matters if it sounds good.

The monitors have XLR & TRS inputs, both balanced.
