Title: [Wanted] Comments and advices about a tape I'm remastering (w/samples)
Post by: fandelive on June 30, 2018, 10:27:04 AM
Hello,

I'm a rookie at remastering and I'm currently working on a blues/rock show I've just taped in a 1000 capacity venue. It's an audience st€@1t# recording.
Source is: 2x DPA 4061's (binaural recording) > SP battery box w/NO bass roll-off > Tascam DR-2d.

Here's what has been processed so far:
(*) see joined PNGs

> Declicker on selected spots (to remove applause)
> Normalisation -5dB
> Bass roll-off and mid boost EQ with T-RackS EQ PG*:
    -4.0dB @31Hz
    -1.0dB @63Hz
    +3.2dB @4kHz
> Gentle compression with T-RackS Classic Compressor*:
    Stereo enhancement: 0.8dB
> Declicker on selected spots (again)
> Normalisation 0dB

You'll find samples of both the original (untouched) recording and the remastered bit here : http://cmlien.free.fr/rs/original.mp3 and http://cmlien.free.fr/rs/remastered.mp3.
Please note: downloading the files might give you better sound quality than direct streaming from the server.

I don't have a proper equipment to process audio files. I work with a Sony laptop and a Sennheiser Momentum headset (that fully covers ears).
Just let me know what you think about the remastered sample. Does it still sound natural? Is it over-processed? Can it still be improved? What would you do to improve it?

Thanks !

I'd sure given em a listen, but for some reason, the mega link redirects to MY mega account.....not sure why, but no can do for a review. I use pretty much the same gear, so would sure like to listen and think about my processing (which is very damn minimal, usually)

I gave the remastered file a playback using VLC today and found it to sound a bit too bright on the mids. So here's what I did:
-0.4dB @1kHz
-0.4dB @3kHz
-0.4dB @6kHz

I think now it sounds more natural. http://cmlien.free.fr/rs/remastered-v2.mp3

Well, the crowd got louder on the remaster.

I'd suggest hard limiting over compression. Compression leaves "breathing" artifacts if the ratio & release time are not set just right. Hard limiting happens more quickly and mostly smashes peaks if you set it right.

Does that mean I won't even have to use declicker prior to hard limiting ?

I've never used one so I guess I don't know!?

I find the redone one harsh on the high end.

Yes it was. Tried to eliminate that in a v2: http://cmlien.free.fr/rs/remastered-v2.mp3

will run your OG source thru my EQ when I get home to Alaska tomorrrow (in Indiana right now)....it will tell me visually where your peaks and valleys are.
