Title: Record Levels With Schoeps/Naiant IPA Combo
Post by: RyanJ on November 14, 2020, 09:23:46 AM
Hey All,

Just some random question about my rig combo. I run the Schoeps with actives and a Naiant IPA. Obviously, I have not recorded anything for most of the year. But I have always had problems with recording levels. I use an M10 with the low sensitivity and then I have an IPA with a 0db gain. When I record most of the time if I record from the board I have to get the M10 level all the way up to 10 and levels don't peak at all. Maybe around -6db. If I am close to the stacks, even then, it hardly peaks and still very high on the M10 level. Especially during shows where there will be quieter segments the levels are drastic and in post trying to fix it there is so much noise floor heard.

I hope this makes sense? I guess what my question is, should I get another IPA that has some gain on it? What could my other options be? I just want more control of recording levels because I literally can just put my M10 to recording level 10 and still wish that I could get some more gain on my recordings while doing it.

Is that using the line input or the mic input?

Whoops. Should specify, line. I didn't think I could use the mic in port for this?

with 0dB gain you kinda need to use mic in

perhaps jon could mod your 0dB to +18dB fixed or something

his preamp circuit should be better than whatever the M10 uses

Honestly didn't think I could use mic in. Would be nice to have more room to work with and not have such problematic noise floor interference when there is quieter segments of a show.

Going to order the 2.0 IPA anyways. Will get some gain switches for that!

Mic-in, low sensitivity, should work pretty well (as  I recall, it is about 20 or 22 dB of gain compared to the line-in). With MK4s, you'd need to hit about 130 dBSPL before overloading the M10's input. As long as you don't have to set the gain knob below ~ 1.5 - 2 (see this post (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=154969.msg2014600#msg2014600) from DSatz), you won't brickwall. I would try that.

Has anyone actually received one of the 2.0 IPAs yet?
