Title: Budget Sub Recommendations?
Post by: BCostigan on March 21, 2005, 07:08:19 AM
I know there was a thread recently asking about the same question but can anyone recommend a sub for $400 or less?   I want to put a 5.1 system together and so far all I have is my fronts (Polk RTi8).  The first piece is gonna be the sub followed by a center and rears.

Look for a used Onix Rocket UFW-10.  They are in your price range and can be found here:

Hsu Research seems to have a good reputation for inexpensive subwoofers.

FWIW, you're better off diverting your audio budget to the main two channels if you're on a budget (amps, sources, cables).  Why dilute your funds for a few bells and whistles?

I have had a Velodyne VLF-810 for a few years and found it to be an excellent sub for the money.  It's not one-note bass like alot of subs--very tuneful and musical.  Not as much slam as some, but sounds far better than others in it's price range.  Good internal amplifier, clean power.  I'd look at some current Velodynes.

Mine will be going up on a'gon if a fellow TS member doesn't buy it soon :)

A friend of mine has a Klipsch that is killer for movies--terrible for music, but for movies it's killer.  Not sure how much it was, but if you're more movie-oriented you could look at their stuff.

Thanks for the tip on hsu subs...I've never heard of them.   As for my budget and multi versus 2 channel......

I like my current 2 channel setup:  Toshiba 3960-> Blue Truth RCAs for music/Canare Coax for movies -> Sony STR-DE897 -> currently #14 ofc monster being replaced by a pair of legeddy's speaker cables -> Polk RTi8.  I have no doubt it could be better.....I'd love to get a Sony ESxxxx or a pair of Von Schweikerts, or B+Ws or a whole host of other goodies but, currently, I'm quite content with my 2 channel setup.  If nothing else I think the sub will greatly enhance my 2 channel. The RTi8s have surprisingly good low freq response IMHO but I know a sub will really piss the neighbors off!   ;D

I think SV subwoofers also has a "budget" sub.  I second the Velodyne.  If for movies you can probably find a cheap open box velodyne at circuit city.  Won't be the most musical sub, but will work well or movies.

Skip the Velodynes at CC--go to a hifi shop.  Very little extra money will buy a really musical little sub.

huh, cheapest Velodyne around our parts is $1100 at a hifi shop.  When one mentions "budget" I don't think hifi shops, rather agon or B&M.

I believe the line starts at $500 or so in my hifi shop.  The CHT series (~$250, IIRC) in CC's and the like isn't nearly as good as the lines just above that.  They are still to be considered in that price range, but just a bit more buys alot better sub.

Your shop probably starts with HGS?  I think that's the name of their teeny tiny boxes...  Pretty decent subs.

Actually CC carries the SPL line.  Yeah, our locals carry the HGS series as well as the servo controlled subs.  IMO budget and hifi can't be said in the same sentence   ;D

LOL no sheot.  My wife recently picked up the bill of sale from my last purchase.  It's a testament to her character that she didn't shoot me on the spot  :o
