Title: New SACD/DVD-A/CD player?
Post by: udovdh on June 10, 2005, 05:16:11 AM
Hello,

What is the current 'good' choice for a player for SACD/DVD-A and CD titles?
The player of chocie used to be a Pioneer 565a but that one is not in production anymore.

Kind regards,
Udo

lots of people are hip on the Denon UDP offerings.
there are also inexpsive models from Yamaha.  Marantz has a couple of nice ones too.

I have a Pioner Elite 45a FS!  I found it to be a great UDP.  Recently purchased the Onkyo SP1000 for digital video connection.  The one thing I liked about the 45a is that it didn't take long to start up.  On my Onkyo it takes a good 30sec or more to play the disc after you inserted it.

I am aware of a few offerings but am looking for something in the quality range of the Pioneer. Not too cheap, not too expensive. Decent quality (not a plastic feel). Good DACs, maybe 192KHz? Etc, etc, yada, yada.

(should work nicely with a NAD C320BEE)

What is not to cheap or expensive.  Give a budget and we can offer a little more help.  Why do you want 192 DAC's?  24/96 should be fine.

i know it's probably been asked a bunch of times before, but i admit i haven't paid attention to the universal player talk.  do most of these players convert dsd to pcm before the d/a?

Scott,

I believe most budget players probably do (except the Sony's), but the higher ends do not.

I saw some 192 KHz titles...
So if I buy a player for the next few years maybe I should buy a better one. (?)
Currently I only own CD's (no SACD nor DVD-A) so I am just speculating and testing the waters.
The local dealer I just visited explained that it will be DVD-A over SACD so maybe I can do without SACD capabilities.
In that case a NAD DVD-player (the T-533?) could be OK together with the C320.

This is an issue for SACD only?
The local importer's page for the NAD T-533 says

Auto omschakeling tussen PCM en Bitstream (auto switch between PCM and Bitstream).
What do they mean? Both DVD and CD are PCM-only? Why change the playback mechanism? (my current CD-player is a bitstream one but I wonder why a DVD-player would switch...)

yea, that is a mystery to me as well.  Which UDPs actualy have a 1bit DSD DAC in them???
I would guess only Sony...and i'm not even sure about their cheaper stuff.

i've decided not to condern myself with SACD for the time being.
Limit yourself to PCM, and then the floodgates open in terms of good sounding options.

I was looking at about 400 euro's (say 485 US dollars) but that NAD player I mentioned is about 600+ euro's (~730 US$).

the new Pioneer "budget" universal is the dv588.  I've heard nothing about it yet.

For CD-only The NAD C521BEE would be a choice but how would the NAD T-533 compare to the C521 w.r.t. CD playback?
Pricing is similar over here. (and the 533 does DVD's so....)

OK, for now the C521 for CD's and later the T524 for DVD's.
