Title: DIY floor standing speakers?
Post by: Evil Taper on June 24, 2005, 03:02:24 AM
I'm looking for some new floor standing speakers and am thinkin the way to go is custom.  Adire Audio sells the components I want but their speakers are expensive as heck!  You can buy the single components from their floor standers piece by piece so would I be saving money building the cabinets myself?  I have all the tools I'd need so how difficult and precise of a science is this project?

Do you have an anechoic chamber at your disposal?  ;)

You like(and are good at) woodworking, you have a table saw big enuff to cut 1/2 inch or better MDF, you can solder, and have a little electronics background.
You don't mind experimenting, rethinking, rebuying, retrying.....you think it's challenging and fun.

Then and only then do you have the meddle to be a speaker-tweaker.

Otherwise, buy Polks or Infinity's and enjoy the ride and the cost savings.

If you feel like a badger:

OK well that's too time consuming then....are the Infinity Primus speakers any good?  Buy a pair of floor standers at circuit city and get a pair of satelites for free right now on those.  150w peak handling so I don't know if that's gonna cut it....

They are having a kick ass sale at av123.com on the ELT with powered woofer bass stand.  The pkg also includes a very nice CD player (Music Hall 25) for $550.  I'm thinking about this for a second system!

Just a thought.  Have you looked at speaker kits?  Starting from scratch would be a nightmare unless you really know what the heck you are doing.  Integrating drivers and crosovers into a nice cabinet isn't too easy.

What is the intended use?
Listening, mixing, Mastering?
You can build fine boxes yourself for listening, but if you are using these
for "critical" purposes like mastering spent the $1000-3000 to buy real
mastering speakers. Go audiophile if possible..

Yeah these are just intended for listening purposes....hoping to get decent bass pressure if possible.

Wow thanks for the heads up on the av123 deal...i'm gonna buy those.  Now what do I need with those?  It says the towers are powered so I'm not going to need an insane amp to go with these right?  Any suggestions on a nice reciever for around 250?
