FYI, besides reading this forum for a week, I'm a total newbie.
The band I'm in is going to record an album this winter, but we'd like to do some dry runs so we can minimize pricey studio time. I'm looking for the proper A/D converter and software package for creating a cheap home studio w/ my laptop. Eight inputs would allow a full live recording with our lineup, six would be sufficient. But money is a big factor, and we could get away with two inputs and do it piecewise. It should also be portable enough to lug to gigs and pull recordings right off the soundboard.
On the software side, i have a feeling protools LE can handle this project (multiple tracks, mixing, mastering, etc.), but are all the others i've been reading about better/worse? wavelab, kristal, etc...

ps- 24/96 would be cool, but certainly isn't necessary. i'm no audiophile.

buy a used digidesign 001 with protools LE off of ebay. 8 inputs with the ability to expand via lightpipe later.
