Title: UA-5 SPDIF Help
Post by: bagtagsell on November 25, 2003, 11:37:10 AM
I am trying to experiment with the UA-5 (standard no mods).  I have it running in my comp with USB then I have my MD runing through the SPDIF out.  The problem is I dont get a signal on my MD.  I have the UA-5 in adv mode. Switch is on optical.  Input monitor is stereo.  Rec source is analog.  Sample rate is 44.1 ( I also tried 48).  It is set on Lo-Z.  Volume monitor is on.  All switches except mic sens are set to about 60%.  Does anyone know whats going on or more exactly what isnt going on.

So, you're trying to connect your MD to the optical or the coax out?

Are you actively monitoring the recording on the computer?  The only way to make the digital outputs active on the stock UA5 is to send a signal from the computer via USB - either playback or monitoring.  You can just open a sound editor, select the UA5 as playback and recording device, and activate monitoring.  or something like that.

you need to do the digimod for the s/pdif to work like The Donald inferred

I have the UA-5 in adv mode.

That's your problem. Advancedmode is *only* for 24/96.

hmm, i've yet to mod my ua-5 and have been just running it straight to the lappy with no backup.  (was gonna do it this weekend, but by the time i got around to doing it, ratshack was closed)  i'm almost positive you have to do the mod in order to get it to run to both simultaneously...however, i've never tried the monitoring technique.  when i get home tomorrow afternoon i will try this out and see if it works and get back to this.  it'd be really cool if this was true...i'll let you kids know.

If you set your playback device as the UA5 and your recording software supports monitoring, the UA5 will work in duplex sending a signal to the computer and back to the UA5's digi outs.  This should also work in "adv" mode (which just means 24bit, not 24/96 as someone else stated), but only in 44.1 & 48k.  The UA5 will not work in duplex in 24/96.

You don't need the mod for them both to work simulaneously.
