Sennheiser headphones question
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:48:56 PM »
I am in the market for a new set of cans and was looking at the HD580's, but those are discontinued and only available used.

Am I right in thinking that the HD595's would be the 580s replacement?

Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

The replacement model for the HD-580 is the HD-600. Sennheiser then released the HD-650 as an improved version of the HD-600. I've had 580's for several years and have always found them pleasing.

I highly, highly recommend the 600s. Great cans.

:hmmm:  600 series may throw me out of my price range, but I'll certainly give them a look.

I have some Beyer Dynamic DT770's right now and just looking for another flavor.

Try buying used, check out audigon and head-fi.  I have a pair of them and they are nice cans, they just need a serious amp to sound great...they scale with your gear which is great.

SP-CMC-4s (C, H, SC terminated to mini xlr)>Tinybox>Sony M10/Tascam DR-2d
Countryman B3 (Omni, mini xlr)>Tinybox>Sony M10/Tascam DR-2d
Audix 1200 series cable from Chris Church, pair of Audix M1280 card capsules

Listening: Oppo 980HD>Yamaha RXV667>Rega R1's + Rega RS VOX + Rega R5S's

Anyone do a Cardas Audio cable upgrade to your Senns?  Worth the money spent?  I see Headroom offers this upgrade.  I plan on using this set of cans at home exclusively for reference.  I do have a headphone amp to drive my current cans.

The 600's and 650's do look tempting. I may just pull the trigger. Someone is selling new 650's at Audiogon for $322 shipped.

Don't ignore the AKG k701 in this price range (they can be had for as little as $240). I prefer them to the Senn sound, though many others disagree.

I'll fluff the Beyer DT880.   They rock the party with a warm amp...

I have the 580's and the 650's

The 580's are more comfy and light to wear
and have a very neutral sound. The 650's are
more lush sounding. Can't go wrong with either one.

I don't have the Cardas cable, but i do have one of these
http://apuresound.com/v3.html

This will take the quality up a level but are VERY pricey.

The HD-580's and 600's use the same drivers.  You just get the Metal Grilles and Carbon Headband with the change in model.  Pick up a pair of the 580's and pop in the 600 grilles, very very sweet sounding setup for the money.  The 650's are slightly more laid back, a touch more forgiving but they're not near twice the can which is what you end up paying for them.

If you're going to invest in the Cardas cable you should consider moving to a balanced rig...  >:D

The 595's are a different lower impedance beast with a much more forward sound.

Yes, but what do you HEAR?

Snagged a used pair of 650's from Ebay for $300..only used 2-3 times so the seller says.  Will need some more burn-in time. ;D
