Pre-Amp with Level Adjustments... such a thing exist?
« on: December 07, 2003, 06:40:54 PM »
I look and look, but as a newbie I'm beat by alot of the jargon....
Is there a pre amp that has a recording level adjustment in it, for possible use with equipment that has no way to adjust levels itself.
Thanks You for any help.

yep, look for "adjustable gain" or "variable gain"

some options:
denecke ad20 (pre and a/d)
edirol ua5 (pre and a/d)
Beyer MV100
Dmic20 (pre and a/d)
mp2
V2
V3 (pre and a/d)
MiniMe (pre and a/d)
MiniMp
PSP2
PSP3

one that has pre and A/D would solve 2 issues at once. Right?

yes, theoretically. all in one boxes are really nice though some folks still use a seperate pre and a/d to achieve the exact sound that they want.

1. how much do you have to spend?
2. what are you using it for, stealth or open?
3. what mics?
4. what are you recording to?

literaly, just getting started...
own nothing yet... going to get the Nomad JB3 or iriver hp120.. I know neither are perfect, but I like the iriver for stealth. Very small.
So a pre. with level adjutment would allow me to manipualte the levels the irver records. Right?
my price range is under 1000

yes sir, sounds like you need an denecke ad20.  This is what you would need.  You stealth with it and its got your level control and an optical out to right into the iriver or the JB3

With a $1000 price range, I surely would not be getting an ad/20! You can get a used mp2 for $350 to $375, a used V2 for $600 to $675 a used, stock sbm-1 for $350 to $375 and your JB3 for $150 to $200 to boot.

Haha, I thought he was goin' cheap style! Let's hear what mics he's runnin'.
For a G, no, don't get an AD-20... but if you don't have your mics yet and you need to get in under $1000 with both, ya might be ok

spend more $$$ on mics i'd say.  thats the place to start..  or a deck first. if your going the NJB then get one, and mics, then look into pre's a/d's whatever else you may need..  good luck, welcome.

I'm understanding, absolutely, that good mics make or break your recording.  Just thought, even with the JB3, I would need a pre amp of some type for decent recordings.  I have aprox $1000 I can spend on myself for this little xmas splurge, so at 200 for the denecke ad20, and I got a line on a JB3 for 250, so that leaves me 550 for mikes....I'll take it to the mic page....

yeah spaceman, I've seen your experiences over at the irver  forum and here, but I'm prob gonna go with the iriver just cause of size and slickness. Banging them hard with demands for firmware upgrades....
If I can figure out which pre amp will let me try to fix levels, I may still be able to get a decent  recording.
Gonna look into the UA5 and Dmic20...off to google

spacman: you think a UA5 might work?
found them in my price range?

if you go with the UA-5 get it from the oade brothers so you can mod it down the road.  The only thing about the UA-5 is there is only 1 light that shows you overs which makes it harder to monitor (IMO, ive never actually ran one myself)
