Hydra cable (got wet...advice needed)
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:57:05 AM »
Well. My hydra cable (1/8'' jack to 1/8'' jack, both male) fell into the toilet last night. Yes have a big laugh lol.   :P

It fell out my pocket. Anyways it got totally covered in water. I dried it off but is it still usable? Or do I need a new cable?

Thanks,
Simon.

is the end the kind you can unscrew?
if so unscrew it and try a blow drier, not on really hot though

I can unscrew the right-angle plug end but not the other end, without breaking into it. On the end I did unscrew it was dry inside. I mean, does the water damage such a cable? I really wouldn't want any drop-outs, etc.

let it dry and it should work just fine

open and let it dry on its own unless the dryer has a cool air setting.

LOL.  :P

I was open taping (well kind of) but I haven't a stand yet so had to wear the mics. I went for a piss after the show and as I did up me zipper (which got a bit stuck lol) the cable fell out the side and into the bowl lol.

A mess, but thats £20 sitting in there, heh.

 :P

At least it wasn't my recorder...  :o

Thanks for the replies, +t

So just to confirm, it should be ok once its fully dry? Piss won't cock up the connections?

Thanks.

Damn, thats a good point. Think I'll wipe over the surface lightly with some clean water on a damp cloth. Can't be smelling while taping, lol.

Hey, just goes to show...shit happens.  ::)

Actually, FWIW, I wear hearing aids (behind-the-ear style) and there's just no way around it, they get perspiration in them and cut out ALL THE TIME.  My hearing aids have no special design features that allows them to survive getting moist...it's just something that happens.  All I do is let the aids dry and they're as 100% good as new.  These particular aids are probably 5 or 6 years old, so if the sweat was gonna have an effect, it certainly would have by now.

Now I wouldn't go so far as purposefully leave mics in the rain to get a recording, as someone on this list suggested 6 - 9 months ago, but as the guys at the time mentioned, even mics can survive a soaking.

Anyhow, I think your cables are 100% fine after drying.

I once was doing some low profile recording.
while "wiring up" in the dark car on the way to the venu, It became aparent to me that while I was working on running wire, the end of the cable had actually fallen between my legs...and right into the opening on the can of coke I was drinking.
Unfortunately, the end of that cable had a DPA 4061 on it....totally submerged for a matter of up to 3 minutes probably.

dried off..worked like butter.
Moral of the story, ...., things dry.
:-)
I seriously doubt you'll have any issues w/it.

That does make me feel much better and have confidence that it'll be ok.

Luckily there was no shit down the pan. 'Cos then I would have left it to die lol.  :D

Glad to know everything is fine with your cable.
Once I had my R-09 submerged in a swimming pool ( thanks to my 5 years old son)  :o.
Well, I did the worst thing possible, turning the unit on right away. It was acting crazy and all. I let it dry for like 4 hours and everything was ( and is ) fine.
Good luck.

if a mic cable can't handle getting wet, it's useless.
after a muddy festival or a beer soaked bar gig, we take our xlr (and sometimes AC quad boxes) and hose them off with a garden hose and a little dish washing soap. they are good as new after drying off for an hour or two. i've read articles of sound companies throwing their 300' snakes and electrical feeder cables in the back of a pickup truck and running the truck and cables through a drive through car wash.

Good news. Taped last night using the 'piss' cable and it turned out great. No problems at all.
