Problems with new sound card and new Dell desktop
« on: June 05, 2008, 01:33:15 PM »
I went out and got one of these:

http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?product=14064&category=1&subcategory=208

My new Dell just came with onboard sound and nothing fancy.

It appears Dell's power supply and specifically the power cables are proprietary.  I need to attach a power cable from the power supply to the soundcard, but the connections do not match.  I can follow up with some photos later this week.

Does anyone know of an adapter or another solution for this besides a splice job? I'd rather not void the warranty and don't want to fry the MB.

are you sure you need a cable?  it should just slide into a open pci slot.

Yeah, I have the PCI slot and that's perfect, but you have to power the external I/O on this puppy (see the Creative page above) and the only way to do it is internally.  There's no option for an external wall wart.

So far in my internet searches it appears I may have to replace the whole damn power supply. :(

Call Dell.

That's calling India and I am not quite ready for the frustration. It may come to that.  :(

So is there a power connector on the PCI card that doesn't match, or on the external part?

I see that they have a forum. Maybe you can turn up something with a search.

Maybe this one will help...

EDIT: Apparently you can power it from a regular 4 pin floppy connector coming off of a pc's power supply.
It is required to hook this up if you have the external chassis. The card itself gets power from the pci slot.

It's a guess without seeing what you are dealing with there, but it sounds like you don't have a 4 pin floppy power connector coming off of the power supply. In that case you need an adapter cable like this... http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/83-1350
