I'm looking into soundcards, open to opinions on cards that are bit-perfect and can be run either PCI or USB. 24 bit isn't that important because I will be using a DAT, same for 96 SR.

Some cards I have noticed from minimal searching:

m-audio Audiophile 2496, Audiophile USB and Delta Dio 2496, Lucid PCI24, Ego Systems Audioterminal 010, Ego Systems Waveterminal U24.

I'm just going to be transferring DATs, and I don't see HD recorder transfers happening within a year. Any opinions and experiences are welcome. I just want something that will get the job done right.

back in the day before i was taping and had to worry about transfers and whatnot i bought one of these --> http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=&product=150

Well, ends up i used it a little for analog md transfers, but i never bought a dat, now i either record with the njb3 or a laptop, so bit accuracy during transfers isn't that big of a deal, since i'm not transferring anything. If i had to do it all over again, i wouldn't buy one, but since i have it, why bother selling.

Anyone have any thoughts on this card for just playback?

yeah, i was rather excited when i got it only later found out that it was pretty much crap. i do like the breakout box on the front tho that i can plug my firewire and headphones into. I don't use it for much of anything else. it does great (imo) in those two perspectives.

agree...i am using the m-audio audiophile 2496 delta pci card...drivers are solid, interface is easy to understand, and little to mess up.

s/pdif i/o and analog rca i/o as well as midi i/o...use it for all my dat transfers, and have the analog i/o hooked up to my behringer mixer to record band rehersals

highly recommended...and probably one of the cheaper cards out there at only $150 new via musician's friend/guitar center, etc...

i was actually thinking of getting the usb audiophile 2496 ($199 new) for remote stuff, and for eas in switching from one computer to another...

don't have one, but i think it doesnt work on xp, and ti think it only has optical i/o

I've had a Delta Dio 2496 for a few months. I've experience NO problems. Installation was a snap, no s/w conflicts, works like a champ. And in WinXP no less. Wish I could say the same about my video card/driver!

i was just gonna bring this up...
the beauty of usb devices is portability and being able to use them on almost any somewhat modern computer, whether pc or laptop

Here's a vote for the only run-in with EgoSys products I've had, the Waveterminal 2496. If all their products are as strong and slick as this one, then go phor it!

I'm the guy trying to sell the Ego-Sys U24 card in the thread linked above and one thing I want to discuss is whether Ego-Sys USB cards (or any USB card, for that matter) can do bit perfect transfers.

The reason I ask is because I came across this old thread on DAT Heads:

Are USB cards inherently prone to resampling, or are there some that don't resample?

I run the Echo MIA in my box... love it.
Friend of mine runs a Lynx one.... I think he paid 500 for it.. crazy bastage.
I can't remember what the deal is with the M-Audio cards, but I recall they weren't as good as the Echo ones..... will see if I can find the info on it somewhere..

no problems even at 24/96 via usb? Seems like people are always saying how unstable that is?

actually, I AM thinking the audiophile 2496, only the usb version, not the pci. Sorry for the confusion.

I think some people may have run into issues with the Audiophile 2496 running 24/96, but for some reason I want to say it was with playback, not recording...I could be wrong though.
however, if this is strictly for DAT, then you will have NO problems, dropped samples, etc with it

Love my ESI WaveTerminal 192x w/ the daughter baord add on. Got everything I think i could ever need. At least fo now. I have also been very impressed with my Digidesign VX Pocket 440. Great for field (except donlge) but I think it excels in playback. I know it only does 24/48 but all of 24bit masters are 48khz so it works for me. The waveterminal does 24/192 if i need it

I'll toss in both the MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) products. 2408 MKIII (I have the MK II version), and 828. both are very flexible and can even be used as standalone units. However, they are beasts. That is, they take up some room, they don't simply just fit into your computer (the 2408 uses a PCI card in addition to the external unit), so that can either be a negative or positive thing depending on your point of view.
