**SOLVED** FLAC Encoding Error
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:59:19 PM »
SOLVED HERE

These are 24/96 files.  I am transferring them from an R-44 to my PC.  The .WAVs have some funky metadata in them that TLH will remove.  When I encode they all verify OK but then when I go to decode or test them they all have errors.

not sure if this helps but I've ran into similar problems with raw files.  if you open them in wavelab or whatever and save them (no editing just save) it should clear it up.  has with me anyway.

OK, SO I opened all four files in Wavelab and I am able to FLAC the two smaller files OK, but am still having problems with the two 2GB files.  Any other tips?

Have you tried FLAC Frontend? I have seen the errors you speak of. 24bit FLAC encoded with version 1.2.1 does not play nicely (read: at all) with older versions of FLAC. The tester will show them as failing, but they will decode fine without any errors. Are you using the most recent version of TLH? I see above that TLH is using 1.2.1 to encode. I am guessing TLH will not handle greater than 2GB files? I have no problem encoding large files (@ 2GB slpit) with FLAC Frontend using 1.2.1 libraries. Make sure the FLAC Frontend you download is 1.2.1B.

Also, be sure to uncheck ALL options except 'Verify' in FLAC Frontend and/or TLH when encoding 24bit.

I am running Flac Frontend 1.2.1b.  I am also running TLH 2.4.1 (Build 160)  I downloaded and update to the latest version when I saw errors in encoding in the previous version I was running.  The errors I was posting above are from both, the FLAC Frontend and TLH 2.4.1 (Build 160).  I will try a couple more things like CD Wave.

More oddities.  I used CDWave to chop off the first bit of the last of the two big files I cannot encode properly.  I had CDWave FLAC the file and then when tested with FLAC Frontend I get this:

Solved:  Not positive this is 'solved' yet.  Something fishy about what FLAC has been doing...

I put the files on my portable mp3 player and brought them here to my work.  (OK, OK, So I have FLAC on my work PC, sue me)  I ran them through FLAC Frontend and tested them just fine.

I did some Googling and it looks like the problem with most FLAC errors is bad hardware, most notably bad or overclocked RAM.  I'm gonna RMA my RAM and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks for playing along.

Godspeed if it is hardware related. ;D

Did this just start all of the sudden? Have you noticed any other oddities with your machine? Random reboots/lagging/BSODs/etc? RAM is always a bitch to diagnose. I had to RMA my brand new RAM 3 times before I got a good set...after buying hundreds of dollars worth of other parts trying to nail down my problem. Been running silky smooth for over a year now though. :)

At least you have narrowed it down to your machine. I would also suggest verifying your RAM timings etc. Setting it to Auto will in most cases NOT set it correctly depending on your hardware config.

Good Luck!

Good point on the timings.  I am pretty sure that mine continually defaults back to AUTO.  I kept trying to get mild OC's when I first completed the build and even and slight CPU OC's the BIOS kept resetting itself.  I never even stressed the RAM initially.

I have not seen anything really buggy lately except that some of my multi-tasking appears labored.  Q6600 and 2GB 6400RAM should be able to handle my level of multi-tasking fine.

I never really understood Memtest otherwise I would try it again.  It always seemed like it just ran and ran and ran, with no results.  Anyway, I have begun the RMA process for my RAM so we'll see how it goes.

FWIW, I did get some complaints on another 24bit FLAC seed that I sent out recently.  I will have to go and re-seed that once these problems are cleared up.

My warranty replacement RAM arrived today.  I'll install it tonight and do some encoding tomorrow since I will have new PGF waves from tonight to toy with.  Report at 11.  FWIW, the Crucial tech told me the new RAM runs at 2.0v instead od 2.2v which might have been part of my original problem since I think the default voltage on my Gigabyte P35c motherboard is 2.0v.

EDIT FOR THOSE FOLLOWING ALONG AT HOME:

Replacing my failing RAM solved the FLAC issues that I was having.

Excellent. Lost track of this post. Good to hear everything got fixed and is working properly.  :D

Memtest does just run and run, but you should notice if there are any failures. Usually 2 cycles should be sufficient to see if it is bad. Several of my old sticks that were RMA'd passed MemTest, but were faulty. Not sure how that happened. My manufacturer, Corsair, also changed vendors and the new version of RAM they sent also had different voltages than what I originally bought. I have to OC mine to 0% to get it to run at 1067MHz. Manually setting it wouldn't work for some reason.

When I ran Memtest on the RAM that I just sent back I seem to recall letting it run for over 24 hours without recognizing anything as being 'wrong'.  All in all I have new RAM and will continue to as long as Crucial provides free lifetime warranties.  :content:
