mid-side f-up help needed!
« on: September 20, 2008, 05:53:36 AM »
Ran my mini-mp for the third time the other night.  Ran 5' split sub cards on stage for Club d'Elf.  After the first set i realized that i had it set in the mid-side mode.  So baiscly it is a sub card recording that has undergone m/s decoding.  It sounds ok, but not as nice as the 2nd set when i ran the mmp in stereo recording.  Is there any software that will go from decoded L/R channels back to M/S channels or do add this to my lessons learned category and move on.  Clearly I have added yet another item to my "pre hit the record button" check list.

Thanks in Advance, Ted

just for the benefit of the forum and other people who might run into this in the future, I'll repeat what I just sent to Ted in an email:

Voxengo (the same guys who make r8brain) makes a great little M/S
plug-in, available for free here:
http://www.voxengo.com/product/msed/

it has three modes: decode, encode, and inline.  decode is used to
decode a M/S signal to L/R.  encode takes a L/R signal and encodes
back to M/S, and inline allows you to adjust the mid-side ratio in a
signal that has already been decoded to L/R (essentially encodes the
L/R signal back to M/S and then re-decodes it to L/R again, but in one
simple easy step).

So, in this case, you want to use the encode function, to encode your
signal back to M/S (which really was L/R that never should have been
decoded in the first place).

Nice!!  Figured out how to use plug-ins, never used them before.  Worked with soundforge but i just needed to boost the volume by 6dbs.  It may not be exactly what the original should of sounded like, but it's a damn big improvement!!  Thanks alot Jason!  I love this hobby, I learn new shit everyday!!! Plus TTTTT
