SP-CMC-8 Mods
« on: September 22, 2009, 06:51:49 PM »
Hello, i'm researching about which mods are applicable to my set of SP-CMC-8 mics, when i bought it i requested the low sens mod, as i was going to make recordings of loud shows mostly at stadiums/arenas .. now i found that there are other kind of mods like phantom power and XLR connectors for use it with preamps and get better results of my recordings. Please if you can help me to understand better those kinds of mods and if anyone already has some SP-CMC-8 with those mods.

Regards.

What recorder are you using?

Unless you're recording EXTREMELY loud things (and by that, I mean louder than the band Mogwai playing in small room, which is pretty damn loud), none of those other mods is really necessary.  Some on here are big on using "3-wire" aka mini-XLR connectors, but I personally think that unless you are doing very long cable runs, that is not necessary and just makes your powering requirements more expensive.  If you plan to run the mics on a stand most of the time, then mini or fullsize XLR may make a bit more sense.

I use the CMC-8 with the low sens mod running into Sound Pros' basic battery box, and they sound great in that configuration (not to mention being very small and portable).  If you run an actual small preamp (instead of just a power supply), like the SP-PREAMP or the Church ST-9100, you may see some improvement in sound (opinions vary), though I think as a rule of thumb, unless the recorder you are using has a really crappy preamp, running a pre in front of the CMC-8 will make a bigger difference at quieter/acoustic shows.  It sounds like you're doing loud rock.  In my opinion, just stick with the low sens mod (which is absolutely necessary) and run it into an SP battery box.

A recorder like the Edirol R-09HR for instance, has a pretty solid preamp that is certainly fine for loud rock shows.
