how much used space do you have on the drive that you want to backup?

are you compressing the data?

PM me for quicker replies as i dont often check all the forums......

even with compression on there is no way you will be able to back up a drive over 1 gb.  You just can't compress that much data down to 700mb of data on a cd.  If you have a dvd burner it will take less but still will be over a couple discs.

Nonsense.  I backed up a 4GB partition, of which 1.5GB was utilized, onto a 700MB CDR using Ghost's compression just a few weeks ago.

I don't think Bean's issue is due to his trying to back up too large a drive - unless, Bean, you have a 100+GB drive that is absolutely FULL of data.  Something wacky is going on here, but I don't know what.

ok so say you can get 2gb backed up to a cdr, anything bigger than that i don't think it will happen even if you use the most compression that ghost has to offer.

so you want to back up 37gb of data, that is what is being used right now.  In brian's case that would take you 24 discs.   I don't think that is what you want to do.  What is it that you would like to back up programs, music?  are you going to put these programs back on your drive?  Do you have a hard copy of any of them.  Unless you want to ghost the whole drive and format and then put the clone back on so everything is the same i don't see the point in backing up the whole drive.  The main point of backing up is backup anything you can not get back.  Let us know what you are trying to do here.

Get an on-the-fly partitioning utility like PartitionMagic and create a data drive to store all your data.  Leave 2-4 GB for your system partition (i.e. C drive), depending on how many programs you have.   You can also store an image of your system partition on the data drive.  Then, if something gets corrupted you'll only have to reinstall your programs and don't have to worry as much about data loss.

Agreed HZ, CDR is not the way to go for such a large all-at-once backup.  DVD, maybe - I believe Ghost will span discs.  But even that's close to 10 discs.

I like thoman8r's idea.  You should be able to create a new 4-6GB partition onto which you'll install Win2K or XP and all your programs - without losing your existing partition's data and install.  Something like this:

[1] create [a] 6GB bootable partition using Partition Magic and leave your current system on a second partition
[2] install Win2K on partition [a]
[3] confirm all is well
[4] delete windows/software directories on partition to clean it up a bit
[5] continue to use partition as your data partition

Something like that, anyway.  And Bean, I believe you have Partition Magic.  :)

thanks guys, i appreciate the help...i need some more sleep to be able to get the balls to do this stuff tho, its so confusing to me...and all i would like to do is utilize my comp for audio recording, but its been acting weird so id like to reformat, clean up the drive, and then put win2k + xp pro back on instead of xp home, and also put back all of my audio programs(ie...wavelab, soundforge, samplitude, flac, cd wave, mkwact, and norton system works, etc)

so, partition magic is easy to use???

and yes brian, i somehow have partition magic 8)

Partition(PQ)Magic is very easy to use.  Make sure that you either
A.) make floppies that allow you to boot to PQMagic
B.) install PQMagic to a drive that you can see in DOS. (either a FAT16 drive or a FAT32 drive with a Windows 98
* thoman8r boot disk).

That way if something goes wrong with windows you can still get to PQMagic.

And BTW, I prefer DriveImage to Norton Ghost, but that may just be because I'm used to working with it.
