CSB w/out battery box?
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:43:48 PM »
Hi there,

newbie question here!  ???

I was wondering if the Core Sound Binaurals will record unpowered. I am seriously considering buying them as my first set of mics, but my ideal setup will not include any battery box. Just my iRiver H320 (rockboxed) and the mics.

Any comments really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Your iRiver puts out something like 3V "Plug-in-Power" which will power the mics, and it should work.  Will it work good?  Will it overload?  I can't say.

My suggestion is to get the better "Core Sound Binaurals" with the built in battery box (as opposed to the "low cost" ones you are probably looking at).  They show up in the yard sale in the $100 range from time to time.

Thanks for the fast reply!

I'm actually looking at the mid-range CSB (not the low-cost, not the DPA-based). However, I don't think any of them come with a built-in battery, but with the external "brick" :)

Cheers!

At any loud show the Cores without the battery box will distort.  Period.  They'll "record" but they'll mostly record distortion.

The mid-range CSB are a fine option, so long as you get the version with the battery box.  I actually have a used set that I can sell you at a very reasonable price, if you're interested.

You do need a battery box or preamp to get consistantly good results.

However I would seriously consider going for this package instead if you don't need the smaller size of the Coresound capsules:
http://www.taperssection.com/index.php/topic,90474.0.html

Lots more flexibility (cards/omnis/preamp), better customer service, and sound that is at least as good at a price that is in the ballpark. The Upgrade to CA-14 omni's and cards with the ST-9100 pre would cost $312 shipped.
AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10
