Well, I have a choice between Cable (Comcast) and DSL (Qwest). Comcast is faster...so I go with that.

Lately everything has been fine with Comcast. Still...the moment any sort of Fibre based internet arrives in my neighborhood I'm going to give Comcast the boot.

Preference (if money is not the primary object):

Fiber optic (fios) > DSL > Cable (Comcast).

We have amazing DSL where I live is what makes that the deal breaker, just depends on how much cash we want to spend. Even comparable DSL on cost beats the comparable costing cable. As far as what I prefer to have to get what i want done, we have roughly 85kbytes up and maybe 300kbytes down, and I throttle all torrent output to 72 up and about 250 down (all figures are kbytes). If you live in a metro area, investigate all of the DSL offerings, not just those coupled with the primary line layer (in our case, Verizon). We got more speed/price options going with someone who repackages Verizon's lines then we did from the evil V themselves... If your out in the sticks or the edges of the burbs, then cable becomes a much stronger choice (in my experience).

If I was hosting servers, or downloading tons of stuff (or taping 6 shows a week), then I'd consider going to fios, but right now I'm not doing either of those.

I'm in Canada - Shaw Hi-Speed Ultra cable.  No comparison here - cable blows away DSL.

My choices here in Humboldt County are DSL or cable (Suddenlink) - I went with DSL as it's cheaper and been very reliable.  I have ~75-80 up and 600 down - plenty fast on the down but wish I had a bit more up.

thanks all.  Getting ready to move in a couple of weeks, and considering upgrading my internet connection.
DSL is what I have now.  It works, but not always as fast as I'd like.   Usually about 50 - 60 kbps for download and about 30kbps for upload.

That sounds on the slow side...especially your download speed...

I have Embarq's slowest DSL...

I always throw about 45-50 when uploading...

And max out at around 120 for downloading...

Fast enough to be workable for me - and not worth the extra cash for cable...

(I get a ton of free DTV stations - so trying to stay away from pay-tv)

I've had several different cable & DSL connections over the years, but for the past year or so, I've had verizon FIOS.  It's the best connection I've ever had.  They offer many different speed/price levels, so you can get what fits your need.  I upload/download a lot, so I went with the option that lets me upload at ~550KB/s, and my downloads top out at ~2.2MB/s :)

Just signed up for Verizon FIOS to replace my DSL/phone/and Comcast cable TV, cutting my net monthly cost in half. So long Comcast, glad I never added internet to the overpriced cable service I am getting now.
