Recorded a show WAV96kHz/24Bit: What do I do?
« on: March 05, 2008, 10:37:08 AM »
Ok so I basicly recorded a show in WAV96kHz/24Bit with my Zoom H2.. lol

I want to get them back to "normal" 16 bit flac files.. and upload it to the LMA..

So I have a few questions:
1) What does 96kHz mean? Should I have used 48kHz?
2) Anyone who can give me a short tutorial for Audacity how to change the bitrate and that kHz "thingy" back to "normal"?

I just wanted the best quality so I figured this was the best setting.

Thanks in advance!

Emile

1)  96 kHz is the number of samples captured per second.  Start here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,1167.0.html
2)  By "normal", I assume you mean 16-bit, 44.1 kHz (CD WAV format).  Start here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,71191.0.html

if all you want to do is resample to 44.1 kHz and then dither to 16 bit, I would recommend using the free version of r8brain instead of Audacity.

I just recorded my first shows in 24/96.  I ended up with about 2.5 X 1.99gb files.  I'm having some trouble figuring out the best way to process / archive them.  The first thing I did was make numerous backups of the original wav files.  Here are my goals:
* make a raw single 24/96 file of the entire show, and convert to wavpack and flac for archiving.  But after I join the files in audacity and try to export, it's only showing one hour nineteen minutes exported (the show is about two and a half hours) -- I'm thinking this has something to do with the file size???  Is there any way I can join and save a complete 24/96 version?

* I also would like to have the raw 24/96 complete recording (the 3 original files joined) to process/edit -- i.e. I just want to remove a handful of irritating claps, do some very basic normalizing.  I could do each piece separately, but would like to do it in one fell swoop.

* Finally, I would like to downsample to 16/44.1, to make a few CDs, and also to flac up to listen to on my rockboxed sansa music player.  Once I figure the first part out, I would use r8brain to do this.

Am I totally missing the boat on something?  I've been trying to find an answer in these forums, to no avail.  I'm usually pretty good at figuring things out, but for some reason I'm having trouble here.  If anyone could point me down a better path, I'd appreciate any advice.  If I'm going about this all wrong, I'd like to know before I waste too much time.

Right now I'm using Windows Vista 64 bit and audacity.  I have another older dual boot system with WinXP and Win98 with Samplitude, which I could switch to if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
