That place is still around, cool.  Bought a 'Wayne's World' baseball cap there almost twenty years ago.  :P

To the OP, any Kangol hat in the 'ventair' or 'bamboo' (what I use) line will work well.  For sizing, if you have an 'average' size head, probably M to L, with S for small heads and XL for larger ones.  They have a size chart on the Kangol website I think.

The furry Kangol is pretty sweet.  They should make it in purple and call it the P-Funk.

FWIW, the ventair's have a really nice hat band that's not too elastic and not too tight.  It makes the size of the hat a little less critical.  FWIW, I'd err a little small for a ventair than a little big.  For any other hat, I'd probably err the other way, but these Ventairs really have alot of give to them.  OTOH, if you're confident of your hat size, I'd go with the size you know you wear.

Having said this, you want to be as inconspicuous as possible when stealthing, therefore I recommend this one... ;D

I wish I had seen the price of the Kangol ventair's from the store in Berkeley. I just spent $40 on a black one. I got a large as per the size measurements and think it will work out great for some AKG's.

That's funny as hell, but when you think about it you may have accidentally hit on something here.

What security guy is going to suspect a smacked ass wearing a hat like that is actually a clever stealth taper?  Might actually work well for someone with a low embarrassment threshold.

There are lots of very silly hats out there:

One of my favorite hat-related taping memories was at HSMF in 2000, when they announced right before the beginning of Dr John's set that he wasn't cool with taping...you've never seen such a wide array of hats surface so quickly ;-)

you can grab a ventair from Lids in the Mall. I sewed elastic loops in my brim and stick the caps/collette them.  Works great.

It'd be really awesome if someone did a write-up or took pictures of their Kangol DIY so people like myself with less intuitiveness/imagination could make one.... just sayin'  :)

I have a vent air left over from when I sold my rig. I only wore it a few times and it has been washed since, though it's been sitting on the shelf for the better part of a year now. PM me if you want it. Cover shipping and it's yours.

Shooting foot pictures aside, what is the general placement of mics in these Kangol hats?  What sort of modifications are necessary?  I have several pairs of mics so I'm wondering which mics can be mounted in these hats, especially CA-11's...  I remember Chris saying his mics cannot be mounted in a baseball hat mount because of the vents - so I'm assuming the same thing would be true with this configuration?

Congratulations, you have successfully learned how to use google images...  However maybe you don't have a firm grasp of the concept of Darwin Awards.  I can only assume you're trying to imply that I am unintelligent because I'm not familiar with Kangol hats - which is fine - good for you for having an opinion and wanting to express it with pictures... but just so you know, a Darwin Award is awarded to someone who shuffles him/herself loose the mortal coil (or becomes sterile) by doing something inherently stupid...

Seriously, though... I'm respecfully requesting advice from people with experience with these hats.  Thanks in advance!

A hat will get you looked at, investigated, and busted. It will not work in circumstances where hats are not allowed (but loud, drunk, rookie concert going crowds need not worry about this).
The mics get buried in fabric and circumstances that are truly unfriendly to audio, so you get that sound like it was recorded from a tissue box, or, from a bowl of mud (worse than schemps), or maybe the cheesy layer of a pocket cooked grilled cheese sandwich -- which is probably why Chris Church doesn't want his product to be placed in a hat - because it sounds like shit in there, and he cares about how his product sounds.
There are far better methods than a hat - but I'm not willing to discuss them publicly,  and I'm not willing to discuss it by PM either.
Get out there and record. Try a technique, if it works, try it again. If it doesn't work, don't try it again.
There is nothing so crucial coming through a PA system that the world will end if it is not recorded to the finest degree, or a total failure, or not recorded at all.

At a venue I attend in Milwaukee, all hats have to come off as you go through security.  They do get some attention.

The same is true in Los Angeles.  I have been asked more than once to remove my hat.  Bringing attention to various types of headgear in threads like this is really not wise.  Moke is quite right pointing out to members here who insist upon posting on this topic:  You are shooting ALL OF US in the foot.

Agree.  I got jumped all over when I posted a similar thread earlier, and frankly, now see the error of my ways.  Please remove this thread or at least remove the reference to the exact brand of hat you're using.

I fully agree with being reasonable and not outrageous about "keeping stealth stealth" but this is a little much, at this point....

It still says "Kangol" in the subject line...

BTW, if you'd like to discuss some techniques, feel free to PM me.

Done.

Um, my spider-sense is telling me that bullet is probably a highly motivated security goon trying to pick up ingenious and secret stealthing techniques from well-meaning folks on this forum so that he can bust would be stealthers at the next show at ______. ;)

...hate to have a hat fly off my head with some mics attached.

That happened to me while taping Ministry...you can hear lots of interesting things on that tape.
