Danley DIY Subwoofer Kit
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:33:02 PM »
this thing has ratings competitive w/ subs in the $4-5k range.  you could use a custom veneer to finish it or flush mount it in a wall to hide it, pretty cool.

45” x 60” x 16” is a big sub.  But the motorhead mantra applies- There's no replacement for displacement.

Found this sales rhetortic amusing: "..and since most audiophiles will find building their own sub a labor of love, the assembly time is just value added.”

Gainesville is 5 hours North of me. Wonder if this is more of a big booms and blasts type LFE only theater sub than something good for music?

i also like the idea of an external amp.  its getting hard to find a passive sub.

When was the last time anyone had a passive sub in a home system?

Plenty of 'follow the plans' type DIY passive sub options.

Linkwitz's Thor comes to mind as a reportedly excellent one. That one may include a seperate, line-level active x-over and EQ shaping board but you use you own amp between them to power it. Not sure of the cost.  It's resonably sized.  I've always wanted to build some of his speaker designs.

true, but it wont be long till people say "whens the last time some one had a separate amp from their processor" and i for one dont want to see that day.

I'm hoping to have a new Rotel 5 channel outboard amp in the next couple of years...

I've been super impressed with the Velodynes I've heard.  I got my pops a 12" SPL series sub a few years ago, the step down from the DD series but one higher than the one I own, and that shit kills.  I can't imagine how the DD must sound if their mid-level stuff sounds that great.

pretty cool pops you have, mine would not turn it on.

i also hear much good about Rythmik.   just read a comparison on audio circle of the Rythmik D15SE and a JL Audio Fathom 112.
Quote
I've directly compared it to a JL Audio Fathom 112, and while the JL will outperform it as far as maximum output goes, the Rythmik hangs with it sound quality wise until it reaches its maximum excursion.  The JL will play louder without distortion, but if this is a 2-channel system I doubt you'll run out of headroom with the Rythmik.

The Fathom is become a legend in its time.  i wanna hear one.

Yeah, but remember that they swim up there to get it on, then die.  I'd guess the death part isn't the big motivator.

"Outdoors at one meter, one watt of input generates 90 dB at 12 Hz;"

Sweet Jebus, 90db at 12 Hz from 1 watt of power.  So you could presumably use a recycled class A tube guitar amp?

how would you hide it in a room?  almost have to build it into a wall.  i guess if you used a drop down screen it could sit behind.
