Sony DSC HX9V 16x.
« on: April 29, 2011, 04:05:07 PM »
Anyone have this camera? Is it worth buying? I have used sony products before and never had any problems.

This one does 1080i video, 16x optical zoom, has sweep panorama and also does 3D. It has a CMOS sensor. And when you sometimes record video you no longer will see those huge never ending lines of vertical light (usually in concerts). Also records audio in stereo, only thing missing is PCM audio recording (which I have on my canon sx210).

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666290110

Saw some videos on youtube, looks really decent.

Your thoughts? Is it better than the panasonic zs10?

Hmmm, the NZ Sony site says: Movie Recording Time    Max. approx. 29min continuously per movie   : http://www.sony.co.nz/product/dsc-hx9v/sku/dsc-hx9v_b++au2
They also have it under Archived cameras / discontinued  ???

wonder why discontinued here as its a new release, its a lot cheaper to get out of NZ
sucks about the time limit, was hoping for longer than 29mins...the zs10 is the same though

I took my Hx9v to Mexico for U2, it was basically the 1st time I used it.

Pros
very good stabilization (best i have ever seen)
good color
alot of features and controls

Cons
I dont like how the zoom lever works, it is not sensative enough
zoom not smooth
movie record button is too small
it had trouble focusing at times(mainly due to lights in background)

Here are the video clips (with cam audio)

May 11th

May 15th
http://www.youtube.com/user/u2rulesmyworld#p/a/u/0/bZKdssnWbAc

scene was set to 'snow' and EV to -2.0 night 1 and -1.7 night 3

Both clips were shot 1080p60 and converted to 720p30 for yt in sony vegas pro 10

the footage is really good, very clear. As for the audio, sure its not the best but its pretty good. Besides I always carry an external audio recorder so sound for me on a camera is never an issue. I say just carry a small audio recorder if you want great sound quality.

"Snow" eh?  Interesting.  I use "spotlight" on my Sony HDR-CX520v.  For my Lumix zs3 I couldn't figure out what would be a comparable setting so I usually just run it on auto.  However, this still does occasionally blow out the heads.  Now that you've mentioned it, I can see how "snow" would give similar results as "spotlight," making the brightest points normal white instead of over exposed.  Gotta try it next time.

Nice work on the U2!     :)

Here is a museum tour I shot with the Hx9v
This is real time, no external stabilizing, no stabilizing in post.
shot full auto with 'tracking focus'

completely hand held, 1st take, 1 take

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RqCFUjMyYA

imo the stabilization in this video is stunning,  if you disagree try doing this.  I dont have that steady a hand

I didnt take any pix during the concerts all video then.  I shot some high res panoramas @ Teothiuacan but the resolution is too high for FB

@monkeyguy, there is a 29m limit on all modes according to the literature

My other thread got Hijacked by HX9V questions so I will answer them here

Both PAL and NTSC versions limit recording to about 29 minutes
We had both versions at the Anaheim U2 show.
PAL = europe sales
NTSC = North America sales

alot of the other questions have been answered above
