hey, just signed up and wanted to introduce myself. not so much a taper as a field recorder. I've used a Zoom H4, and H1 - but after listening over some recent recordings decided to research some better gear which led me here! really interested in a stereo rig, so looking at a SD MicPre and a Rode NT4 - open to suggestion of course.

anything and everything really, from loud stuff to quiet stuff. i'm interested in stereo and surround recording, but am focusing on stereo atm. sorry, that's a bit vague :)

total budget is probably no more than $1500. I was planning on using the H4 for as A/D and recorder, but using a decent stereo mic pre, to improve noise performance. microphone-wise, i'm pretty set on the Rode NT4, but want to look into shotguns at some point...

Hey sorry, I'm not really much of a taper TBH, just hoping to pick up some ideas on mobile recording :)

actually, i did tape a Cure concert years ago.. it's still sitting on my old mini-disc recorder.. hehe

that aside, i'm into all kinds of bands, always finding new stuff.. just started listening to Frank Zappa.. so good.

definitely open rather than stealth. I want it to be highly portable as I would anticipate moving it around a lot as opposed to setting up in one location for a long time :)

that would be an unbelievably portable rig! i hadn't looked at the Church stuff before - thanks for the info.

 if they've been designed for recording live events (i.e. loud), i'm wondering if they would be an appropriate choice for a rig that will be used to capture really quiet sounds too.. i couldn't find any noise specs for the pre-amps though so i am guessing :)

By default they are low sensitivity modded for loud concert recording. However I believe chris will also do it so the pre-amp has a low sens switch and the mics are not modded. This may be a good option for you and quite frankly something that would appeal to me. There are a couple of tapers in Sydney that you may be able to meet and check out their gear. Do you ever get over to Adelaide?

personally I do a lot more field recording than taping. Keep in mind that for field recording and nature sounds one of the most important things to consider is self noise, everywhere: mics, preamp, recorder.
I own and frequently use a NT 4 and am quite happy with it.
Regarding SD MixPre, I had one and loved it. It worked really well with a Sony D 50 plus the NT4 or a pair of (quieter) AT 3032.

If your budget is 1500 IMHO you can do a bit better than CA-14, depending what you are trying to do.

For example, beerdynamic ck930>tinybox>m10

The zoom H4N is garbage and really is only something used by lazy video people who want "easy audio" and not much else.

hey your recordings sound great. definitely pushing me towards the NT4. how do you mount it etc, to avoid handling noise?

My usual mount is a modded Rode Pistol Grip: it works well, is simple and not too expensive. The mod consists in making the hole of the rubber mount a bit wider - just that.
With that and a dead rat you should be ok.
