post your Linux links here..
« on: March 21, 2004, 11:17:03 AM »
taking my annual stab at setting up Linux on my old K6/II box. Got mandrake 9.2 downloading, and am going to give it a shot after running redhat 7.0 and previously, 6.2. the box has had windows server 2003 on it so i'm starting fresh.

i already have audacity and k3b downloaded, anyone else want to point me to some Open Source software links?? (not necessarily recording-related)

cooker I just did this myself :P  Do you have the resources to run version 10?  It's much better then 9.2 IMHO, it's using the new 2.6 kernel which is really much FASTER!

Trillian can only hope to one day be as good as gaim.  It'll never happen, tho. ;)

downloading 10 now...time to upgrade the old 9.0 ftp server.
I also really like the hd installls of Knoppix(though with 3.2 I could never get it to take a static ip)

last night we completely re-did our(me and my best friend who lives next door) firewall/infrastucture.
instead of 2 subnets behind 2 different firewalls, both sub-nets are now behind 1 Smoothwall pc...freed up a machine, better cable management, more responsive and tighter security

Ardour
 - Audio multitracking software--very nice

Audacity
 - Same kinda thing as Ardour, dunno which I like more.

cdparanoia-III-alpha9.8
 - Like EAC, only Linux

XMMS
 - Like Winamp, only Linux

Kopete
 - Like Trillian, I prefer this one, it's KDE's--great integration with MSN and Yahoo for me.

Netscape 7.1
 - I had Konqueror that came with KDE but it's SLOW SLOW SLOW compared to Netscape Navigator.. it seemed to lag, Netscape flies.  I would think Mozilla would be just as good but I can't get it to see my GTK+ libraries  :angry3:

Americas Army
 - Really fun game ;D  I'm a sucker for first person shooters and this is one of the best around which is cool enough to have both linux and mac os ports.. it's free to d/l and play and a lot of fun ;D

Guarddog
 - Good linux Firewall

Knomad
 - Can connect my JB3 to transfer files but currently only USB 1.0 :(

is linux self explanatory somewhat, like windows?  i'd be interested in trying it out but know nothing about it.  i should have a spare computer here shortly and would like to test it out.

Cooker, I'm buying blanks tomorrow, if you want I can mail you the three disks all setup.

Simp, the install on 10 is pretty easy--given your computer is pretty linux compatable (search google for your hardware and linux compatibility).  Most all modern PC's are fine.

For Mandrake 10 I burned the .iso files via Nero, when done with the three I rebooted to the CD-Rom (disk 1 of 3) and it booted directly to a GUI (graphic interface) and you point and click your way to a new OS (select drive/partition to install on, etc.).

We should have a Linux forum ;D
