Radio Shack adaptaplugs(+ / -)?
« on: March 16, 2004, 10:52:43 PM »
On rat shck adaptaplugs which plug is positive and which is negative?
there is a - & + on the plug but they don't correspond to a certain plug.
Also which hole on the adaptaplug female input is pos. or neg?

thanks,
callery

On the adaptaplug WIRE (female recepticle) there is a little writing in the casting (?) that says TIP next to one of the female pins.  The FR-2 appears to be a +Tip input (from the pictures) so you would want to orient the PLUG with the + on the TIP side when you insert the pug into the connector...

Thanks, to be sure I'm clear, the diagram beside the dc plug on the FR2
has the inside (tip?) labeled as positive(+) and the outer part of the
digram is Negative, so tip =+ on the adaptaplug right?

also.... on  the wire coming from  the adaptaplug female part, the negative would have the writing on it , right?

Thanks for the help

If you look at the female wire (yeah they make it SO EASY to see) it says TIP.  The other side has no writing anyway.

And yes, the inner part in the diagram is TIP, the outer is SHIELD (or ring)...

Gotcha.  I just don't want to fry anything.

when I connect my 4pin xlr to the wire coming from the adaptaplug
like your picture, which wire is positive?
One has some writing on it, and one is blank.

Either, it depends on which you hook up to the positive pin on the 4-pin XLR.  But I think if you want to maintain consistency with the adaptaplug, the wire with white writing is positive, the other negative.

One way to find out for certain is touch the blank wire to your (-) battery lead, the white writing wire to your (+) battery lead (no XLR, no soldering, just hold 'em in place with tape or something), put on the adaptaplug tip per Rick's post, and use your voltmeter to check whether it's tip (+), ring (-) or vice versa.  If the adaptaplug (+) is aligned with the (+) on the adaptaplug wiring, your voltmeter should show a positive voltage when touching your voltmeter leads red (+) on tip, black on ring (-).

It's a bit early for me, hope that makes sense!

I gotta admit, I REFUSE to solder (I just burn myself every time).  Pretty sad for a Navy ET and 20+ year computer field engineer.

I gotta buddy of mine that builds power supplies for Star Wars Lasers (yep they're REAL and they got the suckers working now too), that I bring all my cables that need soldering to.

No young Jedi Knight, but they DO make something that will track and knock a missle out of the sky, and can be mounted on a ship or aircraft.
