My old 150s sounded amazing with the Mini-me.    Both are gone now, though. :(

Unfortunately I'm inserting a loud buzzer sound right about here.   If he was asking what to run in between the mics and the recorder, you might be able to say that -- however, the OP did ask what PREAMP sould (sic) be added.  :)

SD744 has two channels of internal pres, so a viable alternative is a cable...AKA no preamp at all.

In my defense, only one preamp has been mentioned thus far. So I guess I am inserting double buzzer sounds right about here. :coolguy:

I feel the preamp in the 744 is more than adequate. I never loved the v2, but plenty of other people have and quite honestly I cannot think of a preamp I would recommend. But, that is IMHO, and YMMV.

I think another set of mic is the way to go Marcus.

I feel the preamp in the 744 is more than adequate.

+1

It's clean and clear. If that's not the sound you want, then add something, otherwise it's another battery, box, and point of potential failure in the chain.

I'll toss out an idea; a Neve Portico. That gives you three sounds: A) The 744 alone for clean and clear. B) The Portico for big iron, and C) The Portico with silk turned on for big iron with super sized coloration.

I think another set of mic is the way to go Marcus.

To do that, he'd need both another pair of mics and a preamp since you only get one pair of pre's with the 744.

As I recall, the TLM170 is a touch on the bright side, no?  If so, then I'd be going for a preamp that leans warm, like maybe a Portico 5012.  For warmth, the Audioroot Femto seems like it has potential...it might be worth keeping an ear on as more and more samples are shared.

EDIT:  Oops, Page just made the same preamp suggstion.  Nice.

I just rethought my previous answer Flarcus.  You need a preamp with lots of flavor...LICORICE flavor that is!   :yahoo:

When I really want to bring home the heat I soak my windscreens in either Tabasco or Siracha over night before a show. Sometimes I soak the cables as well.
