Have you ever painted anything to a fine high gloss finish?
The base prep is intense.  If its not perfect, it will show every detail.  Then there is the dust factor; every speck of dust will show, and you'll want to wipe it off.  Wiping leads to the same thing as dust cover swirlies. Before you know it, it will be scratched up from wiping the dust off.
I've done huge amounts of fine finishing, and can speak to this from an experts level (numerous award winning homes, with magazine articles, and one cover in magazines; and yachts). Its a commitment.

Yes, that is why for wood I prefer paste wax. No worries about dust during the finishing process, as well as, it comes out looking smooth and rich. It is labor intensive, though!

For automotive paint I have an auto bodyman who would do it.

Here is a red one. It is getting to be a tough call. Still for wood grain?

That red color is hawt!

I think you should determine which color sounds better and go with that...

Ray, count me in the wood category. But if the choice is Black vs red, I'd go red. it just looks cool!

x2.  The red makes it look like a contemporary Rega or Music Hall.  Just my 0.02.

Ray it seems trying to make a call based on this group might be a bigger challenge that you thought

Well, due to popular demand it is staying wood. Wednesday I put the last coat of tung oil on it and steel wooled it. Today I put on 7 coats of paste wax. It is looking good. I'll put another 5-7 coats on it over the weekend. By then the acrylic should be in and I'll make the bottom and arm boards. I'll also apply damping material to specific areas and if I sell my PSB's get a new cartridge for it and call it done.

I'll enjoy it for a while and then up for sale it will go. Hopefully, I can afford to keep it for a while before parting with it.

If I get some good light this week, after finishing with the paste wax, I'll post an updated pic.

Look close and you can see I connected the cartridge clip wrong. Oops, I'll have to fix it in the morning.

I had an ES-1 years ago and liked it a lot.  Had an SME 309 on it and some basic mods including lead mat.  Such a beautiful-sounding table.  That finish looks great.  Nice score.
