Crimmycrimcrim is looking for a tiny-ass A/D converter to stealth, 1/8 in and optical out.

suggestions?

SBM-1 is about the smallest you can find.
RCA inputs for line-ins...you would have to get a 7-pin>optical for your optical out though.

I assume you want optical out to go to an MD or NJB3?  Two options, really:

Denecke AD-20
Requires either hacking your mic cables or using appropriate adapters to convert 1/8" to XLR inputs.  Sound Pros sells an AD-20 with 1/8" input, but it's not cheap.

Sony SBM-1
Modded or stock.  Requires hacked mic cables or adapters to feed 1/4" mic inputs or RCA line inputs.  Also requires a 7-pin / optical output cable.

There's a 1/8 mic in too.

The mod itself does not require that the mic-pre side be disabled.  Doug typically disables the mic-pre input side because the op amps he substitutes draw too much current, overloading the power supply of the SBM1.   So he needs to save on power by removing the chips on the mic-pre side (with the assumption that most of us don't use the mic-pre anyway), reducing overall current draw.  I don't know, but I guess he must do something to beef up the internal power supply when you get both mods.

The parts I use for the mod actually use less power than the stock parts, so I don't need to disable the mic input.  So I leave the mic-pre side intact.  On the few units I've modded, I generally leave the mic side alone.  For the one unit I did for myself, I also changed out the op amps in the mic side, so that unit is mod'd for both mic input and line input.

no 1/8" in but it has rca in's and an optical out, is small, and super cheap...dunno about quality though.

Does anyone here have any information on the parts used in the Denecke AD-20
and if there is room inside for a few more ...

Pictures of the inside would be very much apprecitated .. :-)

Thanx
Jon

There's a TON of room inside the AD-20 box.  I don't have it anymore so I can't take pictures, but I'm sure someone here could hook you up.

From SP:

ITEM: SP-AD2000
URL:
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-AD2000&category=570&type=store

Q: Is there any more info available on this other than what is in the
overview?

A: All of the specs the manufacturer has given us are on the page,
unfortunately. It can be used for field recording, with a battery for power.
I would not consider it an upgrade from the A/D built into the MD, so there
really would be no reason to do this(use in field recording).

Has anyone done a critique of the CoreSound mini-pre/A/D ?

I like the PDAudio flashcard interface, but haven't tried the A/D-Pre.

Not sure this is way off track, however, i've posted a thread over at Oade on a contact of mine that's very interested in building a new a/d (w/phantom) similar to that in size of the sbm-1 mod.  Here's the link:

So..how viable would it be to make your own A/D...of a similar size to the SP model on the first page. I'm a hardware cretin, though I did manage to make a Theremin a few years back, so its not out of the question that I could pull it off.

However, this is 1) probably far more intricate and 2) with the components needing to be of a high quality (though I am only after something better than the a/d in a very very old sony md) It could be more expensive than is worth it.

So I guess im asking -

How tricky would it be?
How costly would it be? (i'd be after a 1/8" in optical out too)
Anyone know where one might acquire schematics for something along these lines? (i did a bit of lookin but it was all 8bit...low quality etc)

Cheers
Nick

Bitch, don't start! ;)  Let it be known for the record that after 12 hours of beer drinking, this aussie upstart named Mobius passed out repeatedly in the wee hours of the morning (finally collapsing on a keyboard amidst Toolarmy chatroom ramblings I believe), while Crimson stood triumphant in the kitchen refilling his glass of brew and wondering aloud "what happened to Nick?"

ok, i might posissibly ponder the consideration of thinking about kinda sorta maybe calling it progressive metal, but even other prog metal bands (which in my mind isn't a true genre but rather an elite way to define a metal band that has talent) like dream theater aren't really that metalish.
