Jb3 Car adaptor ?
« on: May 09, 2004, 01:02:38 PM »
I am looking into going this route and then using the  and was wondering if anyone knows of another Jb3 car adaptor , as Creative shows to be out of stock

so I have been searching far and wide for another 5v output car adaptor. (there kinda hard to find as Most were 4.5,6,9,12v)

I found this http://www.semsons.com/pdaplugincha.html

and was wondering if there would be any problem with snipping of the adaptor plug and adding a Rat shack version.
this will not change the output Voltage correct?

The only thing I'd wonder about is the mA output....I'm not sure what the JB3 needs for current off the top of my head.

As for your question about snipping the plug off....you'll be fine.  The circuitry that converts the 12->5v is in the cig adapter end.

I thought I understood it as the Ua5 and Jb3 current draw was 450Ma . But it reached a higer draw for Hd spin up and so forth
that's why I was a bit confused to as if this would be enogh steady current .

I was also calculating my battery times on a 450ma figure aswell

Verified that 4.5 V works perfectly fine too.  I am using a wallmart one which I think is like 15 bucks.  The nice thing about it is the car adapter and the converter are seperate pieces so you can just snip off the cord easily to remove the car piece(just like the official car kit from Creative Labs is like).

I'm using the wally world version... it works fine.  Just make sure you keep the switch in the 4.5v location... if you bump it it moves.  I put a drop of epoxy on mine.  Also,  my testing with 2 @ 3Ah 9.6v rc batts proved to be far less than fozzy's 7.2Ah 12v sla set up.  The only difference between the two set ups other than the batts is the adaptors, so the wm version may waste some juice... not sure.

well, at 46 hrs on a 12v sla, i guess i could afford to waste a lil energy

if it could go at least 30 hrs, i would be very happy

I did find a couple for other unit's such as these two

but could not find the one in ?

Anyone have a link to walmart. or a part # maybe by chance.

thanks in advance.

I had a hard time finding them too but I did eventually(almost gave up but found it just before I was about to leave).   Not listed on their website so that sucks.   Here is a link to some dude's page that has a nice picture of it:
http://k0swi.microlnk.com/REVIEW/PS/POWER%20QWEST%20Digital%202000mAH%20Universal%20Car-Cord%20Adapter.htm

Mine is actually rated at 2000 Ma so that makes me feel nice and safe the JB3 won't ever draw close to that high of an amount.  And it does indeed come with the correct plug that fits into the JB3 on top of it.

Oh wait, here is their offical website where it is listed(part# 0900-21):

Don't worry about the 4.5 V...the JB3 is pretty picky about voltage and would freeze up immediately if it didn't like it ;p
Plus look at the batteries you put into the JB3 internally...they are rated at 3.6 V(get up to like 4.2 V or something when fully charged).

ya I noticed that the int batts were only 3.6

But I could have sworn I seen a thread saying someone had built a Batt pack on there own and it was running at about 4.5v and the Jb3 would not power up .

SO It was nice to hear from a couple folks that infact theres does not lock up or crazy shit. As I was able to find a true 5v car adaptor online for a Ipaq PDA
http://www.semsons.com/pdaplugincha.html

and I Have the adaptor already that I need to plug into the Jb3 just needs to be soldered on.
SO I almost went this route but Im kinda of a hands on type of a dude. (as I run a General Construction company)
SO Id like to buy it and have it now to start tinkering with.
Thanks for all the Help to all of ya's

I am thinking they built a battery pack that used rechargeable batteries and was not a constant regulated 4.5 V....probably dipped too low once discharged some or perhaps too high when fully charged....I dunno.

Yes, that Ipaq car adapter's voltage would definately be perfect but I dunno if 500 mA output is gonna be enough juice for for the JB3(especially on startups).   10 bucks is a good deal though if by chance it did work.

Bean, Your best bet is to buy a cheap meter and test this if you are not sure.  You definatly don't want to guess.  I think radio shack sells meters starting at about $10-20.

i have a multimeter and all that, can you believe i went to electronics school

im an idiot, when putting the wal-mart one together, the tip that goes into the jb3 was set "tip" "positive", so that would mean all i have to do is a continuity test from the jb3 adapter>4-pin end, the "shield" is negative on the jb3 end, and inside the tip is positive, i will let ya'll know whats what in a minute actually, im gonna chop the car adapetr end off....

alright, first, if your wal-mart jb3 head is "tip" at "Positive", then the cable WITH writing is a negative since it holds continuity w/ the "shield" at the jb3 end.....

heres whats fucked up, i cannot for the life of me get a signal or any reading from the other cable, the all black one.......NOTHING, no continuity, no reading or anything......

this is my silly question, do i need to be applying voltage or current to see anything on the "hot" wire??? im stumped

cause i cannot for the life of me can figure that out, is it because i chopped the thing and there no fuse in the cig lighter end now???

on the negative wire W/ writing, at the jb3 end, i get either continuity or a reading of about 160 ohms.......

ANY help is MUCH appreciated, cause w/ out continuity, im nopt doing this

and on a side note, it all werked w/ the cig lighter end on in the car, FWIW, like a champ, no freeze up or anything???

too many connections and hassle that way!!!

but i may do that just to have one w/ a cig lighter end!!

i just did some more continuity test and on the wire w/ writing(the negative)(-) "ring" have continuity, but when i measure continuity w/ the "tip" and the all black wire, i get a reading of about 130 ohms steadily!!!

weird, continuity on one end, and just an ohm reading on the other, WTF??

chrisv, mmmatt, HELP ME!!

one more thing, i thought maybe its a fuse thing, since there one in the cig lighter part, and if i check continuity on the chopped off cig lighter end, i get continuity no problem???on both wires.....

my cameras drivers dont wanna load right and i cant post pics :P

alright, heres what i did brian:

1. made sure that the adaptaplug that fits the jb3 was "tip/positive", that is as easy as putting the adaptaplug on one way or the other. simple. werked in the car hooked up in the cig ligher....

2. chopped off the cig lighter end, then checked which wire would be (+) and which wire was (-), there is a small amout of writing on the adapter part going to the 4-pin, where the cig lighter part would be if i didnt chop it off...so i checked the "ring" of the jb3 end, like any sony end really, the normal looking rt angle ones, well, the "ring" matched continuity w/ the wire w/ a small amount of white writing on it....

3. tried to check the "tip" of the jb3 adaptaplug end, and match continuity there too, w/ the all black wire(ie-the one WITHOUT writing on it, since theres only 2 wires....well, matched the all black wire w/ the "tip" and i get an ohm reading of 130!!! ???no continuity......

its the same style as the creative ones, w/ the 4.5volt converter box in the middle of the chain, it goes:

12v sla>4-pin>4.5volt adapter box>jb3

alright, i got someone else to check their walmart car adapter for the jb3, and no continuity on the "tip/positive" end either, but it werks!!

also, im doing the 12v sla>wal-mart car adapter>v3>jb3 recording tv to see if the adapter "drops" power over the course of a long run, lets hope we get near 46 hrs ;)
