Thinking about a JB3... but what about archiving?
« on: May 26, 2004, 07:56:16 PM »
Is sounds silly, but I've been recording with DAT for the last 5 years and am very used to having a "hard copy" back-up of my recordings after transferring to CD. Granted, I'd be dumping my JB3 recordings onto my HD, then CD.... but that doesn't give me the assurance I need that my recording will last and be archived. What if I scratch the CD? Then my recording is lost forever. Any suggestions? Maybe I'm just anal... but hey, I am a taper. ;)

I should be in bed, but I'm still winding down after a show tonight.  Options:

[1] burn an audio and FLAC disc so you have two copies
[2] share, share, share - offer BTs or upload to archive.org - no better copy than loads of FLAC'd copies floating about across the country

I suggest doing both [1] and [2]

also get the email addys of anyone who was patched into you, so if something happens to your copy (or files in this case) you can get a replacement.

I use DATs and still burn a shn copy and usually 2 audio copies (1 for house and 1 for car) if I need to burn more audio copies I would much rather do it from a shn or flac disc(s) than have to do another transfer.

for archiving, I have found it useful to archive the master FLAC (no track marks), along with a cue sheet from cdWave.  I usually archive all the masters on my HDD each week/month/whenever I have 4.7 gigs of uncut FLACs.  On a seperate DVD, I archive the same show, but with setlists, pictures from the show, and all that sort of information.  Then I burn audio copies and flac copies onto CD for distribution, and upload the show to a digital archive (archive.org or bluegrassbox.com).
By the end, I usually have dozens of copies floating around the country or world, and if on the off chance you lose your archive of masters (i put mine in a fire-proof safe), you can always get a copy from someone out there.

the only things i really take care of are career and music related.  The rest of my life is a wreck, though I am trying to make improvements.

I do reseach and archive my data weekly on DVD.  If you build an archive, why would you not take care of it, right? :)

well, i'm not quite so anal, but i also archive everything.  i don't worry too much about the audio copies i burn anymore, they can be given away.  i flac all my recordings and burn them to cd, and now to dvd.  i use plastic or paper/tyvek sleeves and store them in plastic cases and cardboard boxes (that the sleeves came in).  i have run out of boxes and now they're just piling up.
i have many many hours of stuff in 24bit/48khz from before i sold my usbpre.  i typically track the 16/44.1 version, use the .cue file from cdwave to track the 24/48 version, flac it all, and burn to cd/dvd.  however, there are as many hours of stuff i've never bothered to track or convert.  i'm trying to clear off my hard drives and just dumping untouched wavs to dvd.  some get converted to flac first but are left untracked.
my hope is to find someone interested in doing some conversions for me and just send them a stack of discs for a while.  anyone interested?  ;)
