Topic: So...FLAC has decided to start crashing my computer now.

K6-2 550, 192mb, Win2K Pro....never really had problems out of it so I've never upgraded. Tried uninstall/reinstall, multiple different frontends, it crashes when encoding.  Also tried checking and unchecking varioius boxes withing the GUI and it still crashes everytime. bah! grrrr!

Oh yeah, that too...but it only does it on torrents that have an excessive # of peers. Small ones don't crash and if I seed a show it doesn't, but these shows that get seeded and have 10's or 100's of seeds/leeches will crash me everytime...I just wait until the torrent dies down and I'm fine. Not fixing the problem but dealing with it. Methinks I need to upgrade.

The problem with BT's could likely be blaimed on your NIC.

Are you using an on-board NIC?  Those aren't the best generally, try picking up a brand name network card.  Before spending any money though upgrade those NIC's to their latest drivers/firmware/whathaveyou and see if you don't gain any stability.

FLAC, are you crashing no matter what file or a specific flac file that might be the culprit?

my probelm with BT has nothing to do with the NIC.
its a Intel Pro 1000 MT gigabit adaptor

My NIC is a Linksys LNE100TX. For some reason they don't have any updated drivers newer than the driver disc that came w/ the card.

Re: FLAC...yes it's crashing every file. I'm starting to think I might have some bad ram...I probably shouldn't be too suprised though, since I've been using this same PC for at least 4 years...

Here are some things for Ash and Luvean I gleened from the internet:

If anyone has a linksys lne100tx you need to toss it and get a different card. I did and it fixed all my bsod problems wirh filesharing apps. Just google for "stop ndis.sys lne100tx" and you will see a ton of people with the same problem. I have some cheapo generic thing now (I'm broke  ) and now everything works fine.

Apparently, your cable/DSL modem could also be the culprit, I've read of several problems with the Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem.

Essentially it could be anything in your network chain, probably something in that lineage has a memory buffer leak in it's firmware that's overflowing or something similar.

It also seems people getting BT to crash have had issues with Zone Alarm 5, rolling back to a version of 4.5 solved their issues.  Have either of you recently upgraded Zone Alarm?

If you have an Intel Ethernet Adapter, try the following:

Before you start, first make sure your computer has the latest Service Pack and security-related hotfixes installed, or you may well be owned by one of the many worms going around right now while you attempt this process.

If your system has a Infared HID Input device that connects via USB, remove it from your system, and remove the hidden device from Device Manager. You might need to check the option "Show Hidden Devices" from the View menu.

Uninstall any firewall software such as ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Norton/Symantec, etc. You should shutdown and disable, but not uninstall, any antivirus software that has a scanning engine that has transparent network scanning, such as NOD32's IMON module.

Search using the search engine on http://developer.intel.com/ for the latest base set of network cards drivers for you system. It is crucial to get drivers dated 3/4/2003 or later.

Uninstall your existing files from via the Device Manager, and remove any Intel Driver add-ons packages like SNMP or PROset via the Add/Remove Control Panel. Reboot your system and reinstall the latest Intel Device Drivers using the Intel installation utility, not the Device Manager. You don't need to install anything beyond the base set, unless you want PROset functionality.

After the driver is installed, examine it's Properties sheet via Device Manager. You want to verify the correct driver is installed by checking the date and version information. Then make sure "Power Manager" is not enabled for the NIC, and if available "Adaptive Technolgy" is On, "PCI Bus Efficiency" is Disabled, "Offload TCP Segmentation" is Enabled, and "QoS Packet Tagging" is Disabled. Check these settings then reboot the system.

Enable your antivirus scanner first. Then reinstall the most recent version of your firewall software. Please note that I've noticed BSOD errors with Kerio Personal Firewall 2 and below when used with Intel drivers. You might try the new 4.x releases.

Ash, crashes can often be attributed to bad ram!  Run memtest!!!!

my problems only occur when my BT upload rate is more than my BT download rate.
weird. also, I didnt install the Intel driver, just the stock MS/XP driver, so I dont have the power managemet and Pro software installed.

no other problems othar than this 1 BT problem.
also, I should rephrase, it doesnt crash the OS, but it drops the IP from my firewall/NAT. the only way to re-obtain the IP is to physically shutdown/restart the machine(ipconfig -release/renew will not work)

Luvean, sounds really familiar to the threads in this DSLReports thread, as per the loosing your internet connection completely, etc...  It had to do with the actual broadband modem, what are you using to connect to the internet?

its not my dsl bridge as my other clients/servers are connected fine when my BT machine looses its IP.

my connection goes:(Speakeasy DSL w/ 4 static ips)
Speedstream dsl bridge> Linux/Smoothwall (w/ 3 NICs for firewall/NAT - NO proxy)
Smoothwall connects to 2 networks, 1 for servers and 1 for clients.

never had this problem when I ran Win2000...only with XP Pro

i had this issue.  try unchecking the delete files after encoding option or whatever it's called.
