external power for psp2?
« on: September 21, 2004, 12:37:32 AM »
wondering if i should get a shit-ton of rechargeable aa's for the psp-2 > mod sbm-1 (10 total!) or go the external power route.

the psp2 says it takes 9v max...will it take 6v like the sbm-1?
i have a 6v 7.2AH sla...

what do y'all think?

if the psp2 will run on nimh batteries (the psp3 will), it will run on 7.2 volts (6x 1.2v), can't see how you would HURT anything trying it @ 6 v to see if it works.

Why not just run it on internal nimh batteries?  Or why not use a 9v wallmart li-ion battery and sell the 6v?

I have run mine on 6volt echocharges with no issues. Seems the battery light flashed a few times when doing this for very long shows but still gave me an hour or so after it started. I now use a custom 9volt that someone else had built for one - looks to be a few cordless phone batteries put together.

wire it up, start 'em running and time it :)

[edit] the unknown is how long the psp2 would run --

my sbm-1 would easily run for 3+ hours on 4x 1,500mah nimh batteries -- so being really conservative, figure those would suck down 2ah of your sla's 7.2 ah of juice.  That leaves 5ah for the psp2, but as a battery drains its voltage drops.  Fobstl mentions the low battery light coming on when running the psp2 @ 6v, the question is thus at what point the sla's voltage would drop below the shut-off threshold for the psp2 -- unless you can find somebody else running exactly the same setup, the only way I can think of to determine this is to wire these up, start recording and see when they stop passing a signal.

Richard Campbell has a psp2... might want to drop him a line and talk with him about it.

I ran it on 2300mAh rechargeables internally, but they were really too large in diameter to fit well in that cage.  I think some 1800s or 1900s will work just fine and give you plenty of power.   That think will run forever on a set of AAs.

eaa love you long time running alone off 6v sla, like 10 hours...should have no trouble running a shitmapper and eaa and getting a whole show in.
