Onkyo SP1000
« on: November 22, 2004, 08:11:30 PM »
Looking at a possible DVD upgrade and with all the problems with the Denon's (macroblocking, not playing discs, etc) ad the new firmware that allows the Onkyo to pass BTB/WTW via HDMI>DVI I'm looking in this direction.  Still a couple isues I need to look into, but anyone see this player?  Hear it?  Supposed to be best <$2K player and looks good to boot!

i haven't heard that unit, but i do have the sp800.  the sp1000 is a clear step above so it's not a great comparison.  they upgraded the video DAC from 12bit/108mhz to 14bit/216 mhz and the audio DAC looks different as well.  the sp1000 is also clearly built much better as well.  All that being said, i am very happy with the sp800.  I've had it for a year, I think it sounds very nice (especially the SACD side), but i don't have all that much to compare it to.  the video playback was a clear improvement over my older basic dvd player, but i don't have component video input on my tv to really see how good it is.  I have had no issues with compatibility with any computer-burned dvd-a's.

The Onkyo DV-SP1000 has caught my attention as well.  Still not sure why (my) Denon DVD-2200 will not play a disc all the way through.

Has anyone experienced an SP1000?

Onykyo DV-SP1000

For comparison...

Scott,

Look into the Integra DPS-8.3

or better yet, the DPS-10.5

http://www.integrahometheater.com/model.cfm?m=DPS-10.5&class=DVD&p=i

The SP1000 is sibling to the 10.5.  Mainly same features, but there are slight differences a $500 price hike being one big difference.

I'm going to wait a few months as Onkyo is making firmware available for the BTB/WTW over HDMI>DVI and some are seeing an audio sync problem via digital outs.  I've come to grips with the THX mandate of 80Hz crossover, but not thrilled.  Still seems the best one box solution.  For around the same price you can run Pioneer 59avi>DVDO HD+ via HDMI 480i and use the Realta chip......
