DIY refference disc swap ?
« on: March 17, 2005, 04:49:10 PM »
I had an idea today.
I've got (and I sure we all do) a bunch of material that iv'e taped myself that
I use as particular refference tracks for various sonic aspects.  A great bass responce tester from various bands,
razor imaging from others. any way, I thought it might be cool if we each made a sample disc or DVD and then passed them around?

i'll be first to throw in.  But it might take me a week to make it
I'll keep it at one dVD, or one CD, or both (for 24bit and redbook)

ok...nobody likes the idea I guess?
I thought it would be a nice way to hear the 'best of the best" of all of our work.
i'd love to hear a mix disc of everyone's favorite pulls.

I wouldn't mind making one to make the rounds, but it'd have to be FLAC format for me. Most people know their own rigs best, though, so I guess that's why the low response.
Out of the game … for now?

Nick -
Is it that you want to borrow my Stereophile reference discs ?
Or you want to trade some 24/96 stuff with strong bass to 30Hz or so and a lot of top end ?

I think it's a great idea Nick!   I love certain shows or even versions of songs in shows that make my system shine.  I've been meaning to post a thread looking for dead shows that really make your playback sound great....sounds like this is along the same idea?

dead 3-29-90 SBD from archive.
A fun listen and one of my favorite "test" CDs looking for control of basso profundo di Phil Lesh.    ;D

I like the Buena Vista Social Club for vocals, as this has many varied voices and great mastering.

The Bela Fleck Acoustic Planet albums are great test drives as well.  Banjo tone and attack is my target here.

What music do you like to test drive with and what do you listen for in it ?

===========================================
For the "Best of Disc" I'd gladly throw in a track or two.
Probably not up to the rest of the group, I am the new kid on the block......

to clarify a little, ...
we all have our favorite refference material for various reasons.
I've got several GD shows that I use for bass extention and soundstage depth.
A bunch of individual tracks from various comercial releases for imaging, more soundstage info...etc.

I was thinking it would be cool if we all made individual refference mixes complete with a detailed info file " i listen to track 02 for these reasons.." and then swapped them amoung ourselves.
My point was, maybe you guys have better material than I do..and if so, I want to hear it.
:)

speaking fo March 90 GD.
I wrap myself around the 2nd set of of 3-25 a lot.  great scheops MK21 FOB source..it has a lot of spatial info, good imaging of the stage layout, and just wonderful ambience.

I've got a DTB show from 11-20-04 that I recorded FOB w/my 414s setup blumlein that has *scary* realism w/voices coming from behind you as well as this killer 3-d soundstage.

another STS9 show w/one track in particular that has the deepest bass information i've ever heard on any CD of any band anywhere...

things like that, you know?

I'll put mine together, and it might be a mix of 24bit and 16bit stuff, and then ofer it up today as a little vine or something for us to pass around, and was thinking more of you could do the same and we could copy stuff we liked from each others refference disc.
If you want to include some stuff from a stereophile CD, then thats cool too.  the drum solo on disc II is hard to beat for its imaging.

we could do it loop style - that might work the best...

looking forward to it...

nick - are you talking about that sts9 you recorded in maine last year with two different rigs (one per set)..? my wife loves that recording, and it is in reglar rotation here at the house...

it was in Boston (4-21 I think).  same rig, just blumlein for a set and DIN for the other.
the DIN set, I believe its track 5 or 7.  that has that bass info that has to go down to the nether regions of human range.
:)
its in rotation a lot at my house too.

6-30-03 was another that I recorded...in Maine.  that was w/the Soundfield.  another nice pull.

my basement flooded hard...and this has sidelined my PC activities to just web access at the moment.
my network was down there.  It was a finished basement.
I remotely controlled my systems via VNC, and my shit is in diss-array at the moment while I tear the walls out and battle mold.

but, i'm in still.
and I have most of my stuff compiled and ready to burn.

Very sorry to hear about the basement. It always sucks to have a few chores thrown on the heap.
If you're not in a Radon zone, a French Drain with a good pit & pump is usually a fairly permanent solution.

If you want to send what tunes you have my way, I'll add a song or two and send it on to whoever wants to complete it.
What format ? Redbook or FLAC 16/44.1 or Hi-rez by PCM-Wav or DVD-Audio ?
