Newbie needs help understanding external power for festivals
« on: April 22, 2005, 10:06:34 PM »
Hey Yall,

So I have done a bunch of reading and searching and still need some help with this whole external power thing.  I will be attending a few festivals this summer and need to find out what I really need to keep my gear running.

I will be running SPC4s>Digi mod UA-5>JB3.  Basically my question is what do I need to run this rig at festivals?  I plan on only taping 2 maybe 3 shows per day.  I know this is a very basic question but when I read the remote power boards I am starting to understand but am generally lost.

Could someone explain this to me in a little more detail, and what do I really need to power my gear?

Thanks,
Joe

Ok so I think I am starting to understand this more.

So I need some sort of SLA batt or RC batt and need to adapt the cables to plug into my devices and then just make sure that I have a voltage regulator or converter that makes it match my gear.

Am I getting this right?

On the right track. What do you run. Most gear will be 12, 9 or 6 v, then some stuff like the jb3 needs some sort of voltage regulation. Some stuff, like the ua-5 is good from 12 to 9v so you can run it very easily.

SPC4s>Digi mod UA-5>JB3 is what I will be running.  So let's say I get a few 9.6V RC batteries and I get a VR box made by leegeddy to run both the UA5 and the JB3 would I still need a voltage regulator for the JB3?

No, if you order the RC batts and get the box from Leegeddy, you're set.  He'll make you the interconnects (usually XRL, correct me if i'm wrong) to go between the box, the batts, and each peice of eqipment you're running.  Check out Bean's thread on the VR box, it was one of the first made if i'm not mistaken.

And of course, be sure to drop Marc a line.  He'll hook you up for sure!

basically here is what the flow will look like

                                             >   pass thru/unregulated  voltage  > UA 5
multiple rc packs   >  vr box
                                             >   regulated 5v > JB3

MK 4V > KCY 250/5 Ig (KS 10I)  > VST62IUg > 722

im getting mine moddedto go like this, we dont know why we didnt do this in the beginning ???

                                     > pass thru of 7.2v for v3*
     multiple rc packs
                                     > regulated voltage to 5v for the jb3

*the reason were doing this is 1. the v3 can handle any voltage from 6-12v and 2. that means more power/runtimes in the long run becasue the heat that the vr box is putting off is just wasted energy which=more runtime and 3. leegeddy suggested it ;D

yeah. after running my v3 with the walmart 9v straight, the 6v regulation isn't necessary. no need for extra heat dissipation either.

guys, good thread all around. +t
