SETTING ANALOG LEVELS ON A VX POCKET V2
« on: May 16, 2005, 12:14:00 PM »
QUESTION FOR ANYONE OUT THERE?
HOW DO YOU SET LEVELS ON THE VX POCKET V2 IF YOU ARE RUNNING ANALOG IN?
(STRAIGHT IN FROM THE SOUNDBOARD)
I USE N-TRACK AS SOFTWARE AND I WAS TRYING DIFFERENT OPTIONS BUT CAN'T GET IT.
DO YOU HAVE TO SET LEVELS IN THE VX POCKET OR N-TRACK

THANKS
BRANDON

PLEASE DON'T SHOUT AT US, we're generally willing to help out without YELLING. That said, I'm no help with the VXPocket, but I'm sure others will chime in.

You must open the Digigram control panel (I forget what Digigram calls it) via the icon in the icon tray. Make sure "Analog" is the source in. There will be faders there so that can be used to control the input volume. However, I usually left these at factory settings and used the WinXp interface to control input volume.

To access the audio panel in WinXP, go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, click on the 'Audio' tab. Under "Sound Recording," make sure that the VX Pocket is selected (I think it says something like "VX Pocket #1"), then click on the "Volume" button in the "Sound Recording" section. This will bring up a set of faders that can be used to control input levels as well. This is where I adjusted the input volume on analog inputs.

IME, depending on your source, you may want a preamp or attenuators in line to help reduce chances of brickwalling.

Yes.  First Google result from keywords difficult to read allcaps sums it up nicely, though there are many more links on the subject, some more scientific, some not:

Nobody likes to be yelled at — in person, on the phone or in print. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to stop some people from doing it on their web pages, in their e-mails and in their brochures. I am referring to the overuse of ALL CAPS which basically amounts to someone screaming at you in print.

Back when we used the typewriter as a writing tool, it was common to use all caps as a means of heavy emphasis. If you wanted a word or passage to be seen, you used ALL CAPS. Thankfully, today we have a better method. Today, we have bold fonts.

Study after study has shown that it is much more difficult to read text in all caps than it is in upper and lowercase letters. We look at and read words by their letters but also by the shapes of those letters in patterns. These shapes are called the "coastline" and refers to the ups and downs of the descenders and ascenders of the letters. When words are written in all caps, there are no ups and downs. All the shapes and heights of the letters are exactly the same. When words are written in all caps, we have to read the words letter by letter which really slows us down. Read this paragraph in all caps to see how much longer it takes.

How did that feel? Probably not too good if you could get through it at all. I had a hard time just typing it. Yuck. If text is typed in all caps, a designer will probably need to retype it to convert it to upper and lowercase letters. It's time-consuming and it leaves more chance for errors. If you are writing copy for a brochure or newsletter, and want to indicate bold styling or extra emphasis, I would encourage you to bold the letters and give the designer a printed copy of the text.

Reading allcaps rapidlly becomes fatiguing, just like listening to a recording with harsh, brittle highs becomes fatiguing (to me) very quickly.  And, using proper case is simple common courtesy.  Allcaps hurts my head like lack of punctutation hurts yours.

Yes.

yes, it bothers me, too.

I use the VxPocket mixer/control panel to set analog input levels.  The only thing I'd add to Mannys good info is that you should also make sure nTrack is using the VxPocket as its input device.  You should open the VxPocket control panel, set it to "analog" input, BEFORE opening nTrack.  I used to use nTrack and I recall it giving me problems if I opened nTrack first before selecting my input on the VxPocket control panel.

If this doesn't work, report back and I'll try to run through the process on my laptop.

Yo, thread hijack!

Huh, try reading kanji, hiragana and katakana.  that is my one big complaint about the japanese language, I cannot for the life of me tell where a word begins and ends!  It literally reads like this "watashiwabakadesu" when it really should say "watashi wa baka  desu" or in english "Iamanidiot" er..."I am an idiot".

Sorry, you can have your thread back....
