processing tips for sbd recordings?
« on: June 29, 2005, 10:15:54 AM »
Taped from a sbd last night due to numerous issues, and while I'm happy with how it came out, it suffers a bit from SBD-itis (ie. dry, heavy on vox and not to lively souding).  Short of a matrix (didn't see anyone taping audience) is there any tweaking I can do to improve things, like filters, eq or such?  I use Audition 1.5.

I'll attach a quick sample to give you an idea of what I'm working with.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Sounds pretty alright to me, except for for the usual "Soundboard-itis" :)  I wouldn't touch it.  I guess you could run a little compression over it but I don't think EQ'ing would help.

Is that Wilco?  Or somebody else doing "War on War"?
I'm gonna go put my spacesuit on boys, then lets get this dirty cocksucker in the air! ...

yeah it's them.  I agree that it's pretty good, but also read a lot about L3 waves and various other compression tools. Wondering if it would make much of an audible improvement or just result in "tinkering".

Everyone at ViaChicago will want to hear it anyway. They love the SBDs over there!

this one's just SCREAMING for a matrix to my ears.  To bad they had "No audio/video Recording" signs pasted to the front of the venue, so basically no tapers were around.  The Wilco soundman was pissed when I told him.

Stan must have been in a good mood - the sbd patches are rare...  What a shame you didn't get the mics going too!
Some eq (more bottom end) and reverb might help this one out.

So how was the show anyways?

yeah, came to the eq conclusion too here. Finding the bass a bit lacking.
