Schoeps users: MK5 vs MK4
« on: July 01, 2005, 01:58:48 PM »
Not that I will be owning any of these mics anytime soon, just wondering:

How come more Schopes users don't own the MK5 cap instead of the striaght MK4...

I would think the versitility of the omni and card setting would make this cap a great assest to any taping set up

is there a sonic difference between the card settings?

thanks

Probably a couple reasons...

- According to Schoeps, "The MK 5/CCM 5 has a slight high-frequency emphasis when compared with the corresponding single-pattern MK 2/CCM 2(omni) and MK 4/CCM 4 (cardioid)."

- The price of a MK5 is only about 15% less than the price of a MK4 and an MK2.  That makes the MK5 a pretty expensive capsule.  I think a lot of us get capsules a little at a time.  Another advantage of owning MK4 and MK2 capsules is that they can be used simultaniously (lend to another taper, multitrack, etc).

the frequency response of the MK5 in cardioid is superior for our purposes than the MK4.  The MK5 has a slight boost +2 db gradual from 2khz to 20khz this helps replace HF lost through scattering in far field recording.  If you got the bucks go for the mk5s.....and the tubes too if you really got the bucks =)

the ONLY possible change I've thought of making is trading the 4022's in on a pair of ccm5's. be real nice to have 1) no bodies, 2) no extra caps to deal with, just a switch, and 3) really want some omnis.

youre only really getting the omni change...your 4022s are fixed cap-bodyless :)

Something the other thread did not mention that might be relevant is that the 4036 and 4052 are based on different capsules.  The 4052 is based on the 4006 and the 4036 is based on the 4007.
