24/96 FLAC/Wavelave issues
« on: July 26, 2003, 12:28:34 AM »
I have confirmed that there are definately incompatibility probs  somewhere in flac or wavelab or windows xp with playing back 24/96 wav>flac>wav files.  I am getting spikes in every recording that go wav>flac>wav.. these spikes don't reside in the original wav file or in the flac file, only in the decoded flac file and only when played back through wavelab.
Computer guys:  where is the prob?  is it in wavelab or flac or what?  what would fix it?

thanks
Wes

What version of the FLAC enc/dec are you using? Does this occur when you decompress these same FLACs on another computer?

Hmm ... the latest version is 1.10. Are you sure you have the right stuff installed? I'd say the problem is with Wavelab if your files play fine in other programs and decompress as bit perfect. As for what the problem is, I have no idea.

Are the spikes showing up in the waveform or do you only hear them and not see them? What version of Wavelab?

Sorry I'm not much more help, but it seems that Wavelab is the problem.

Go to www.mikewren.com/flac if you want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the FLAC engine.

wes-
which files are you having trouble with?  after i upgraded to the most recent version of flac, i stopped having problems and all of the stuff you sent me that i've decoded is fine.  if you have specific files let me know and i'll try em out.

Jon,

I think you may need a flac plug-in for winamp that you may be missing ???  I would look into that first.  Try reinstalling the entire flac front end as well, that might help.  I think you need to take a computer class...hehe

I would take your original WAV and do a wav>FLAC conversion, then make a fingerprint of these (call them 1st gen FLAC)

Then take these FLACs, uncompress them, and re-FLAC them (call these 2nd gen FLAC), and make a fingerprint. The fingerprints for 1st and 2nd gen FLAC files should be identical. If they are not, it means there is something wrong with your FLAC program, try re-installing and/or updating.

Some other questions I have that might help ID where the problem is:

-To clarify, you said your WAV>FLAC>WAV files are glitching only on playback in Wavelab, have you tried playback in another audio editing program like Soundforge? What playback methods/programs have you tried so far?

- Are the glitches always in the same spot on playback? Might want to listen for a glitch, then replay over the same spot to confirm if the glitches are random on playback or if they are actually in the wav.
If they are indeed at the same spot on playback, can you see the glitch in the waveform at high magnification?

Peace,
Ben
