Adjusting levels after recording
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:02:24 AM »
Hey all. I recently taped a Nickel Creek show in MI. I was there with full rig in hand, but security made me take it down (venue plus the band's ridiculously particular taping policy). Anywho, I was left with my little crappy "stealth" mic and my D7. The major problem that I had with doing this has to do with the crowd noise in between songs. The abrupt shatter of applause would brickwall, so I was reduced to having to manually turn up and down the record volume for the actual music being played and for the time in between where the crowd was clapping and whatnot.

Anywho, there are quite a few spots where the levels for the music are just a little too low, but the crowd noise after each song is fine. Some of the songs ended up being recorded at different recording levels due to my complete lack of experience (my first time using the D7). Anyway, I was wondering if there was any feature in Adobe Audition that might allow a pseudo "smart level adjust" (for the lack of a better term) that would automatically adjust the levels and flatten them out a little (so the change from a low level record volume to a high level - and visa versa - isnt so abrupt).

I hope I'm being clear enough with this explaination. I don't really know much about Adobe Audition, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as i know there is nothing like that in audition. it should be pretty easy yet time consuming to bring all of the songs to the same gain via the amplitude effect. i've been using audition for about 2 years now so if you have any more questions feel free to pm or email me. zacthomas at sc dot rr dot com

Yeah, that's what I assumed. I've already started doing it, but unfortunately I need to find a way to make it flow a little better. It'll just take some more time. I appreciated the advice though  ;D
