Subwoofer Cables???
« on: November 02, 2005, 04:54:29 PM »
Hey All

Just wondering what type of cable you would use with a subwoofer.

What I mean is you walk into Best Buy and they've got cables specifically marked as 'subwoofer cables'.  Are they identical to a 75ohm digi cable or a 50ohm analog rca cable or are these completely different?

I'm brand new to this subwoofer thing but have one coming in the mail and would like to make sure I have the right cable for the job before it gets here.

Thanks
AKG C4000 > P-mod UA-5 > NJB3 (48KHz) > SVU-2
DPA 4061 (x1, hat mounted) > MPS 6010 > P-mod UA-5 >  NJB3 (48KHz)

Looking for another 4061 or even a pair of 406x mics to replace my single.  Please help me stealth in stereo.

That could depend on your preamp.  My subwoofer can be connected with a 75ohm digital cable, with RCA cables, or with regular speaker wire.

What subwoofer connection options does your preamp have?

The only option my reciever has to connect my sub-woofer is a single rca type jack on the back of the unit.  The subwoofer also only has one rca type jack as well.  The reciever manual doesn't tell me anything about the type of cable to use though.  Just in case anybody is wondering the reciever is a Yamaha HTR-5830 which will be used for my 5.1 computer system.

Sounds to me like you need a 75 ohm digital cable to connect it.

Cool, I've got lots of good digi cables sitting around.
Thanks for the help goose.   ;D

If you need a really long cable to place your sub in the corner, you can make a cable using some spare star quad or coax wire.  I'd do that before I bought any "subwoofer cable" from best buy.

Depnds how conductive a coat hanger wopuld be to an electrical signal, though I kind of guess it would at least spray sparks ;D  Only one way to find out >:D
