Wav to Lossless Compression Problem
« on: November 07, 2005, 07:41:41 PM »
Ok, I did a 24/48 recording on the microtrack and tranfered it to the computer, opened it with soundforge and down sampled to 44.1. Opened that file with CD Wave and tracked, now when I try to convert those files to Flac or Shn or Ape none of the progs will let me. The error I get with flac is:

WARNING: Found non std 'fmt' subchunk which has length =40

ERROR: unsupported compression type 65534

anyone know what the hell is going on with this? I have flaced single tracks of 24 bit wav before so i am not sure what is happening here. HELP!

Something funky in CDWave, I'd reckon.
Which version ?
What are you saving the files as ?

What happens when you save them as a track directly out of SF ?

If you want to throw one of them them on my FTP I'll give it a look.
It sounds like a file header problem.

version 1.9

i'm just selecting "save" as I always have

not sure what you mean by the last thing, its a single track out of SF then i load it in CD Wave and track it, i can currently take the single track that I have from SF and convert it to Flac so I think your right about this being a CD wAve Problem. I would be happy to upload a file to your FTP if you could take a look at it, thanks and +T

You need to select the "alternate 24bit format" in the save dialog in CDWave, otherwise you get the issue you're referring to when trying to flac.

What are you going to do w/ 24/44.1 files anyway?  You're going to need to dither to 16bit if you're trying to make a CD.

i'm going to torrent them that way, the only reason i resampled from 48 to 44.1 is because of the flac issues with that, anyone wants to burn a CD they can dither the files themselves, i am looking right now and I dont see that "alternate 24 Bit" option your refering to?

Really?  It's in the save dialog on the lower right hand side of the box.  Says something like "use alternate 24bit format".  Are you sure you have the newest version?

What issues does FLAC have with 48 kHz files?  Works fine for me.

The Alt 24-bit Format checkbox is on the right side of the Select Output window that pops up when you Save the tracks.  If you don't have it, sounds like you need to upgrade.

I haven't tried this, but maybe you can just save them as flac's right out of cdwav?

fwiw, I've had this problem you are talking about, and didn't know how to solve it, so I thank everyone for their answers, as I now know.

+Ts around.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I've also had success opening and resaving tracks in the alternate format if you've already tracked it and didn't save using the alternate format.  Apparently it's just a problem w/ the file header that causes flac to error.
