t00b headphone amp
« on: November 09, 2005, 07:44:34 PM »
Has anyone ever heard anything about this unit?   I'd like something to listen to my cans with, my current system doesn't have a headphone out.  Is there any problem with taking a tape loop out from a preamp to drive a headphone amp?

I might just buy it to try it...

I've never heard of that amp, maybe you should check out the amp board at head-fi.  What kind of headphones are you using?

Right now I have Grado SR225's, I'd like to check out the AKG K 701's and the Sennheiser 650's.  I'm faithful to the gf, but I wouldn't mind playing around with some different cans from time to time, keep it interesting.

It doesn't hurt to try new things.   :)

If you're interested I will probably be selling my Musical Fidelity X-Can V2 in the near future.

Have you read the reviews of the Xcan v3?  The v2 reviews were ok.   ;)

Lots of chinese made amps are coming out of the woodwork.  I would also recommend head-fi's amp section.  I have a millet tube amp and it rocks with my Grado's.

edit: you might want to factor in the shipping costs from Hong Kong..it will be expensive.   :(

48 GBP to ship here, what's that about $85 US? OUCH is right.

Yep, my vote goes to a millet tube amp.  Headphone.com sells em and i'm sure you will be able to find someone on head-fi who can build you one if your interested.  I use one with my Grado's (SR60 and SR100's) and they sound lovely with it, tubes definitely tone down those sharp highs and really make Grado's sing (Grado's are often referred to as Grato's on Head-fi   :D).

I got mine cheaper because i had it custom built.  Not sure how similar the headphone.com one is, i imagine its just as good if not better.

Looks like these are both hybrid solutions (tube pre section with SS power amp section).  If you're interested you might want to check out an all tube solution like the Bottlehead SEX.

So for $679 I get a box of parts?  Feel like putting it together for me?  :P

The kit itself is only $389....  I've built a few tube amps, this kit doesn't look too hard, just run down to your local RS and pick up a decent soldering iron and a DMM and you should be all set.

My current system doesn't have a headphone out.  Is there any problem with taking a tape loop out from a preamp to drive a headphone amp?  ::)

I don't think it would be problematic at all, but I'm not 100% sure.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.
